How to prepare planting material and soil

So that snowdrops, daffodils, tulips, crocuses, hyacinths, lilies and iris bloom on your site in the spring, plant the bulbs of these plants in the fall. But first of all, you need to protect the planting material from fungal diseases. Soak the onions for 30 minutes in a solution of potassium permanganate (5 g per 10 L of water). Then choose a landing site. Varieties that bloom in April thrive in partial shade. The rest prefer sunny places and do not tolerate excess moisture. Prepare the soil. If the soil is clay, drainage is necessary – pour sand or expanded clay into the bottom of the planting hole in a layer of 3 cm. Add compost or fertilizer to the soil with a predominance of sand. It is impossible to use fresh manure, this can lead to the appearance of all the same fungal diseases.

1. The bulb is buried to a depth of three times its own height: too low planting will deprive the shoots of strength, and too shallow will provoke freezing in winter. So, remember: we plant snowdrops and muscari to a depth of 5 centimeters. Early daffodils, tulips, crocuses, hyacinths – to a depth of 10 centimeters; camassia, lily and iris – 15 centimeters; decorative bow – 20.

2. After planting, be sure to compact the surrounding soil and water abundantly – this will remove excess air and strengthen the bulb in the ground.

Small-bulbous plants (tulips, daffodils) look good on alpine slides. You can also plant bulbous flowers in a single carpet. Then they will set the rhythm for the entire site. Do not plant one or two flowers on the lawn.

You can cut off the leaves of bulbous ones only after they have completely wilted (in the shoots – the substances necessary for growth in the next season). However, withered leaves will ruin the appearance of your lawn.
