If you are an experienced summer resident, then you probably know what weeds are, because every year you have to deal with them. The easiest way to get rid of weeds is by hand weeding. It is much easier to remove plants with a strong root system when using a manual rooter.
From this article you will learn how to make a weed extractor with your own hands. The article will consider varieties of rooters, and will also offer 2 options for self-manufacturing a manual weed remover.
Varieties of uprooters
There are several types of manual weed extractors. We suggest that you familiarize yourself with their types, which will allow you to choose the most suitable option for yourself.
garden fork
With the help of a garden fork, you can remove a weed with a fairly developed root system. But this is provided that the fork teeth are bent at an angle of 45º or more. If they are bent less than 45º, then it will fit for loosening the soil and removing weeds with a weak root system.
When choosing a garden tool, it is important to pay attention to ease of use. The inventory handle should be comfortable, so you can avoid pain in the brush.
Root remover for gardening
With the help of a root remover, weeds with deep roots can be removed from the ground. Such devices are very different. Some have a sharp V-shaped blade, others look like a fork with 2 flat and wide teeth, and there are also models that look like a huge corkscrew.
Crevice Weed Cleaner
The slotted weed extractor has an L-shaped blade. With its help, it is convenient to clear the distance between the tiles, which are usually laid out along the paths, from the weeds. For the same purposes, an ordinary kitchen knife is often used.
Chopper use
There are 3 types of choppers that are used for weeding the garden: Dutch, manual and straight.
A distinctive feature of the Dutch chopper is a small slope of the blade. With this tool, it is impossible to remove weeds with deep roots.
A hand chopper is a small handle to which a blade is attached at a right angle. It is designed to remove young plants.
Straight choppers are devices similar to hand choppers. They differ only in that their size is much larger. With their help, weeds are removed by chopping movements.
Manufacturing technology of the weed extractor
A hand-made device will be reliable and durable. So, you can get rid of not only the top part of the weeds, but also their roots. So, to make a weed extractor, you will need a tubular body, which will have a cutting part made in the form of a gutter with sharp edges. On the opposite side, a wooden handle will be inserted into the weed extractor, which will be fixed with a screw through a hole in the metal.
Materials and Tools
Such a device can be made from cutting a pipe having a diameter of 25–40 mm. As a handle, you can use a piece of the handle. Of the tools you will need:
- Drill with a drill.
- Grinder with cutting disc.
- Measuring square.
- Files.
- Sandpaper.
- Plane.
- Screwdriver.
Manufacturing procedure
Now let’s start the technological process. To get started, familiarize yourself with the layout of the weed extractor. This will help you to accurately determine the size and shape of the device, as a result of which the process of making a rooter will go easier and faster.
The order of work:
- According to the drawing, mark the steel tube and cut it according to the length and shape of the drawing.
- First fix the tube and use the grinder to make 2 longitudinal cuts. The excess part of the metal can be removed with a transverse inclined cut.
- Now cut the end of the gutter at a 35º angle.
- Remove the burrs with a file.
- From the inside, sharpen the working part of the tool. Finish the lower edge with a semicircular file.
- Now drill a hole for the screw to attach the handle. Sand the root remover with sandpaper.
- And at the last stage, insert the handle into the rooter and tighten the screw.
Such a device will allow you to remove weeds, leaving the roots of the grown plants intact and without destroying the nearby layers of the earth.
To remove a weed, stick the rooter into the ground near the root of the plant, loosen the soil around it, slightly turning the tool towards and away from you. Then slightly lift the plant with the soil extractor and remove it from the ground with your hand.
Deep root weed remover
We invite you to familiarize yourself with another weed extractor manufacturing technology.
You will need a corner having 25 mm. You can use an old corner that you might find in your workshop.
The corner must be cut to a length equal to 30–40 cm. You will also need a profile pipe, as shown in the previous photo. We will use it to attach the handle.
Now you need to make a sharp tip. Set aside 15 cm from the edge and make a mark along which the corner of the sharp tip will be formed.
Using a grinder, make a cut.
This is how the edge should turn out. Now you need to weld the profile pipe to which the cutting will be fixed.
Also, another piece of the profile pipe will be welded to the fixture, so a support will be formed that you can step on with your foot.
Then you need to adjust the size of the stalk. It should fit tightly into the hole of the root remover.
All metal parts must be welded.
In the profile pipe into which the cutting will be inserted, you need to make holes that will allow you to connect the root remover with the handle.
Then the handle is inserted into the tool, the screw is screwed. This is what the finished tool looks like.
So, if you need to make a weed extractor yourself, then you can use one of the technologies proposed in the article. So, you can eliminate weeds without unnecessary time and labor costs.
