They say that in order for good luck to accompany you throughout the year, you need to hang at least one new toy on the Christmas tree every New Year. And if this toy is made with your own hands, then you have a real chance to forge your happiness with your own hands, not hoping for chance.
Ekaterina Lebedeva, director and ideological mastermind of the Nezabudka handicraft gallery, offers a small author’s master class on making Christmas tree toys using velvet powder.
For work you will need:
Any flat plywood figures, sandpaper, matte acrylic paint, matt acrylic varnish, adhesive tape (I have Craft Premier), velvet powder (I have Craft Premier), stencils with backgrounds for decorating ribbons, rhinestones.
Progress:
1. We skin the blank of the toy and cover it with two layers of matte acrylic paint (in one of the colors that will be used on the toy), dry it.
2. Apply two coats of matt acrylic varnish (I use French varnish Dulux celco aqua). Dry and skin with fine sandpaper.
3. Apply adhesive tape with a synthetic brush to the workpiece with a thin and even layer. Brushes deteriorate very much from the adhesive-scotch tape (it is difficult to wash off and after several times of applying it with glue-scotch tape they completely stick together), so take a brush, which you do not mind. Dry for 15 minutes.
4. We put a stencil on the workpiece where the adhesive tape was applied, we do not specifically press it into the adhesive tape (it will stick to it well). Fall asleep on top with the first color of the powder (mine is black). Use your fingers to lightly rub the powder into the stencil.
5. Brush off excess powder from the stencil and carefully remove the stencil from the workpiece. If everything is done correctly, then the stencil should not tear and there should be no adhesive tape left on it. Here’s what you should get:
6. Next, we prepare a second contrasting powder color to fill in the remaining space on the workpiece. The color can be used either alone or mixed from several powder colors. I have mixed burgundy, dark brown and black. We fill the entire workpiece with the prepared color, including the already made stencil. And also rub the powder into the scotch tape.
7. After you feel a dense velvet coating under your fingers, you can stop. The excess must first be brushed off with your hand, and then with a soft cloth.
8. Repeat everything on the second side of the toy.
9. Then we select a decor from ribbons and rhinestones. We glue the gel on the Moment glue. An unusual and very stylish Christmas tree toy is ready! We rejoice and hang our masterpiece on the tree.
