Modern dachas have long ceased to be just vegetable gardens. Now it is a beautifully organized space for relaxation. A do-it-yourself decorative well can decorate even the simplest garden. Below you will find detailed instructions on how to make and install such a structure yourself.
Design options
Having studied the decorative wells offered by specialized stores, you will understand that they are all very similar to each other, and such a pleasure is not cheap. In search of originality, you can contact a landscape designer and order an individual drawing, but in this case you will have to pay an even more impressive amount. The way out suggests itself: why not try to make and install a well on the site with your own hands. And you don’t need to spend extra money, and the well will fit perfectly into the design of your garden.
So, decorative garden wells can be as follows:
- wooden teremok from logs;
- with a stylized “crane”;
- with and without a canopy;
- built in the form of a small Chinese house with a roof covered with tiles;
- a tall wooden “nest” assembled from flexible birch twigs;
- decorated with a small decorative fountain;
- stylized as a water mill, a ship, etc.
Probable forms of structures deserve a separate classification: cylindrical and cubic, rectangular, asymmetric, hexagonal. The main thing is that it is in harmony with the rest of the buildings on the site: a garage, a barn or a bathhouse.
As for the materials for construction, they can be very diverse: from stone and brick, wooden beams or simple logs. Also, decorative wells are collected from improvised materials: used car tires, unnecessary tin barrels, etc.
Video “Do-it-yourself decorative well”
From this video you will learn how to independently make a decorative well in a summer cottage.
Styles
The choice of the style of a decorative well largely depends on the overall design of the summer cottage. So, country houses with an unpretentious garden landscape are ideal for country style. If you are a fan of oriental traditions and culture, opt for a Chinese house with a curved roof. Modern minimalism implies the absence of multiple decorative elements and the use of the same materials from which the house and outbuildings are built.
DIY assembly
Of course, complex structures with a curved roof and complex lighting cannot be built on their own. But simple decorations to assemble with your own hands are within the power of everyone. For example, try building a simple wooden well according to our step-by-step instructions.
For work you will need:
- birch board or timber of a suitable size;
- a jigsaw;
- chisel;
- wood saw;
- screwdriver and drill;
- fasteners;
- roulette.
Take care of a detailed drawing of the future design – so you can do it faster and better. The proportions and size will depend only on your imagination, but they should be indicated in the drawing to make it easier for you to work.
Basis
The boards from which we will build the base of the well should be marked in places where there will be grooves for assembly. To make the design look attractive, the boards need to be cleaned of chamfers and other things. It is important that the joints are without gaps. To give the head additional rigidity, another board is attached to the upper part of the base – there will be a so-called collar. In places where the racks will be installed, appropriate grooves should be made.
Supports and roof
Everyone marks the bars for the racks at their discretion, cutting out the contour with a jigsaw. We fix the racks to the base of the well with self-tapping screws, file the top of the racks in the form of incomplete angles and fasten them with wooden chops. Make the holes for the screws a little smaller so that the fasteners securely fix the structure.
All components of the roof – planks, rafters – should be sawn at the right angle according to the drawing. Grooves are made in the dome, the rafters are fixed in pairs. The “umbrella” should be securely fastened with planks with screws or nails; at the end of the work, a decorative top is attached.
Gate installation
When the main work is completed, we proceed to the final stage and mount a decorative gate to make our well more like a real one. For the deck, a round beam, fixed on racks with wooden dowels, is suitable. A bucket can be made from several wooden dies of approximately the same size or any ready-made container can be adapted. It is not at all necessary to take care that the gate functions – the design has a purely decorative function.
Decor
It’s time for the most interesting – decorative finishes. Needless to say, the well should be in harmony with the overall style of the site. In general, there are several areas of design:
- marine – with a handle-collar in the form of a steering wheel, a base trimmed with anchors, and decorative blue lighting;
- Chinese – with upturned corners of the roof;
- minimalism – a strict structure with a minimum of decorations;
- antique – with stucco and forged elements;
- medieval – made of aged brick with colored glass elements;
- country – wells in the form of miniature mills or log houses.
A decorative well can be an independent decoration or part of a landscape display.
Sometimes unusual flower beds are made from it. In any case, it will definitely become the highlight of your garden.
