Owners of dachas spend a lot of money on the improvement of their sites. For this purpose, decorative paths are laid, artificial lakes or summer arbors are being built. But even simple items made from improvised materials can decorate a summer cottage. DIY crafts for giving – the topic of our today’s article.
What materials can be used
Although the store sells a variety of materials for needlework, you can find suitable items on your site. The household sometimes accumulates a fair amount of unnecessary things that, with the help of imagination, can be easily turned into something beautiful and useful.
Some of the most requested are:
- plastic and beer bottles;
- obsolete car tires;
- wooden blocks, boards and plywood;
- barrels, baths and basins;
- hoses;
- remnants of linoleum;
- unnecessary furniture;
- bumps;
- and much more.
Video “Crafts for a summer residence and a garden with your own hands”
From this video you will learn 5 ideas for crafts for giving, and how to make them yourself.
Original ideas
The main requirement is not to be afraid to experiment using your imagination. Interesting ideas are sometimes born literally out of nothing:
- An elementary lawn for grass on a personal plot can be broken using the same tires. Then arm yourself with a brush with paints, and get the original decoration.
- Plastic containers are sometimes not even remade, they just paint or draw some kind of cartoon characters.
- Several logs, fastened together, turn into a sculpture of a garden horse pulling a cart with flowers, the functions of which will be performed by a fruit box with nailed wheels (log cuts).
Since big always starts small, here are a few examples of useful garden crafts that you can do yourself with a minimum of tools.
Decorative well
The dimensions of the craft depend on the size of the site on which it is supposed to be installed. Various materials are used for manufacturing:
- The well bowl is built from 2-3 old tires installed one on top of the other, and a flower bed can be broken in the very top.
- From several pieces of timber or logs, the support posts of the well and the upper jumper are constructed, for which slots are made in the tires. The posts are driven into the ground.
- The roof is made from sheets of slate, polycarbonate or lining. You can cut off a few curved strips from another remaining unclaimed tire.
- A small basket of flowers is hung on a crossbar as a bucket.
When the design is ready, arm yourself with paints (always oily, sticking well to rubber) and apply a pattern imitating brickwork to the tires. Please note that once a year the drawing will have to be updated.
Palm flowerbed
True gardeners like to create flower beds of the most bizarre shape. A pair of hands made of rubber gloves, holding green plants in the palms, looks original.
The craft is made as follows:
- In whole gloves, a quick-hardening sand-cement mortar is poured in a ratio of 3: 1. Consistency – liquid sour cream. Sand is required clean and very fine.
- After pouring the solution, the gloves are given the necessary shape using cardboard, sand and rags.
- When the solution hardens, remove the gloves. The workpiece is cleaned, puttied, covered with soil and painted.
The craft must be placed in the garden, pour fertile soil into the “palms” and plant flowers.
glowing stumps
Sometimes in the country you want to build a small place for evening gatherings. It is not necessary to build a gazebo, you can fence a small area, set a table and chairs. To make the recreation area look creative at dusk, instead of the usual chairs, it is better to install log stumps, covering their tops with fluorescent paint. As a result, you will become the owner of a fabulous corner.
Before painting, the surface of each stump is deburred and carefully sanded. Next, paint is applied and allowed to dry. You can apply paint to the entire surface of the log seat, then it glows entirely in the dark, highlighting the entire area.
Rag flower pot
If there is some cement left in the gardening and there is an unnecessary floor rag (preferably a whole one), it would be a good idea to make an original flower pot:
- Cover the bucket with a rag.
- The falling ends on the floor are smoothed out, giving them the appearance of plant petals.
- The entire structure is coated with a cement-sand slurry and allowed to harden.
After hardening, the rag turned upside down with “petals” takes the form of a decorative flowerpot of an unusual shape with a rough surface of light colors.
Flowers from wire and bottles
Although there are plenty of real flowers in the garden, artificial flower crafts also turn out to be useful. Even winter frosts are not afraid of them. There are many options for crafts that fit well into the landscape.
Here is a brief instruction for making chamomile from three white plastic bottles:
- We cut the bottles approximately in half. Chamomile requires three blanks, each 1 cm higher than the next.
- In the blanks, we cut out the folding petals, after which we put all three on top of each other. The blank with the neck is the topmost.
- We unfold the petals, placing them evenly.
- We screw the yellow cap on top.
Having drilled a pair of holes in the cork and threading a wire through them, the chamomile can be attached to the stem – a piece of thick wire, a thin tube or a metal bar.
Creativity
Flat stones are a real find for a novice master. By laying them out between the beds and coloring, you can get:
- ladybugs;
- bare foot prints;
- frog, caterpillar, etc.
In an old log, it is easy to hollow out the rotten part and organize a bird feeder. Cans make excellent lamps, and it is easy to build a wine cellar from an old barrel.
Learn more about how to make these and other crafts.
Log feeder
Although the stores are full of all kinds of bird feeders, homemade ones made from the same plastic bottles or wooden logs look much prettier in the country. Below is an example of a feeder that can be built from a sawn piece of a small log:
- A core is drilled in a log, forming a hollow cylinder inside.
- The sides are made from saw cuts of a smaller diameter – being attached to the end of the log, they will close it on both sides.
- On one side, cuts are made in the log and in both cuts, sufficient for a bird to freely fly inside.
- At the top of the log, rings are screwed to which the rope is attached.
Now the feeder can be hung on a tree and filled with food.
Cache-pot from old dishes
The interior of a veranda or terrace can be creatively decorated using old shoes as flowerpots, the same car tires hung vertically on a wall or laid on the ground, an old dump truck toy or a bicycle – in general, all kinds of rubbish.
An interesting solution is to use old dishes, which a lot accumulates in any household. Whole or leaky mugs, teapots, pots, cast irons will do. Such planters look beautiful on the dining table, surrounded by “real” dishes, they can be placed on the railing of the gazebo or hung on wires in the window openings.
Cabinet for wine from a wooden barrel
Equipping a recreation area, you should think about building a kind of wine locker. For this purpose, an old barrel is suitable, which will have to be slightly redone:
- In the barrel, a part of the boards is cut out from the front side, leaving everything else intact.
- Inside, shelves are built in the form of boards knocked together into a lattice. The shelves should be long enough to hold a wine bottle.
- Holders are constructed in the upper part, to which clean glasses will be hung by the legs.
The top of the barrel will serve as an excellent table.
Leaves of concrete
Although concrete is not one of the materials that are always at hand, sometimes after some construction work there is a little of it left. In this case, you can build very interesting crafts.
Here’s how to create imitation leaves from concrete:
- In a garden or forest, a green leaf of the largest possible size is selected. Burdock or water lily will do.
- A small hill is poured from the sand, on which the spread sheet will take on a voluminous curved shape.
- A layer of concrete about 2 cm thick is applied on top (too thin a layer may crack).
- The top surface is smoothed, then the concrete is allowed to harden.
Upon completion, the resulting concrete craft is turned over, the sheet is removed. For beauty, the inside can be tinted or laid out with a pattern by gluing colored pebbles.
Can lamps
In the evening, sometimes the garden plot is illuminated with electric bulbs. However, no one forbids making original lamps with your own hands. As blanks, you can use transparent jars (from under mayonnaise, for example).
Jars should be closed with metal lids, as wax candles will burn inside. Ear-holders are attached to the covers, through which chains are threaded, allowing you to hang artificial lamps on trees, a fence or a porch of a house.
Small white pebbles are poured inside the jars (raw beans are also suitable) with a layer of 5–7 cm. Thick “long-playing” candles are inserted into this layer.
Other options
You can share ideas about creating garden decorations for a long time. From slabs, birch logs with branches and polyurethane foam, craftsmen create creative figures that compete with traditional garden gnomes. Flowerbeds or cool decorative ponds are built from old basins and buckets.
For the construction of most crafts, drawings are not needed, just look at the photo.
Of course, many of these items in terms of functionality are clearly inferior to industrial designs. However, their uniqueness and creativity more than “repay” all the flaws.
