In many general diseases, the vessels of the retina undergo changes that can be seen by looking at the fundus of the eye.

In arterial hypertension, the ophthalmologist observes the progressive changes in the retina, which is an important guideline for the internist. These changes can lead to severe visual impairment.

In diabetes mellitus, the development of eye fundus changes depends mainly on the duration of the disease and the degree of its compensation. In long-term, poorly controlled diabetes, most patients have eye fundus changes that gradually lead to retinal damage, deterioration of vision, and even loss of vision.

All diabetics must be periodically examined by an ophthalmologist in order to receive timely conservative treatment or laser photocoagulation to stop the development of retinal damage.
