Diseases of peonies and their treatment

Diseases of peonies are bad for their appearance. To enjoy beautiful fragrant flowers, you have to learn how to cope with all the ailments.

Viral leaf diseases in peonies

In most cases, viral diseases enter the garden with an infected rhizome. Already mature plants can become infected with the virus from neighboring plants or weeds. Pests are the vectors of the disease.

Diseases on peonies can arise from an excess of nitrogen fertilizers

Most often, peonies affect the following diseases:

  • yellow mosaic virus;
  • mottling virus;
  • ring spot virus.

It is possible to determine the disease with 100% accuracy only in laboratory conditions. Only external general signs are visible to the eye. In May – June, half rings, streaks or stripes of light green, yellow appear on the leaves of the plant. The leaves acquire a marbled color, small spots merge into large ones.

If you do not pay attention to the first signs of the disease, then the flower will soon die. Prevention will help prevent the disease. Make sure that there are no pests on the shrub, spray it with fungicides, rejuvenate the plant in time, do not plant next to strawberries.

Fungal leaf diseases in peonies and their treatment

If you grow a peony in the wrong place or do not care for the shrub, then fungal diseases will not keep you waiting. The most common are:

  • gray rot;
  • rust;
  • brown spotting;
  • brown spotting;
  • root rot.

Diseases appear in the first half of summer, quickly spread to all parts of the plant. Without treatment, the bushes lose their attractiveness.

Gray rot is manifested by a characteristic bloom on the leaves and buds. It is not easy to notice her. Diseases progress in conditions of high humidity. Spores overwinter on plant debris, in rhizomes, and are spread by ants. The affected parts of the plant are cut off and burned, the bush is sprayed with a solution of copper sulfate.

Rust and mottling appear after flowering: brown spots with a purple tint appear on the upper side of the leaves. The disease spreads quickly to healthy plants and spores are carried by the wind. Warm and humid weather contributes to the development of this disease. The affected shrub does not tolerate frost well, blooms poorly the next year. As a preventive measure, the peony is sprayed with copper preparations.

Examine your plants regularly, pay attention to the slightest changes in the color of leaves, shoots and buds. Carry out preventive treatments so that diseases bypass your garden.
