Probably everyone would like to have perfect eyesight, referred to as “hawk eyesight”. Nowadays, when we often strain our eyes by looking at the screens of computers, tablets and smartphones, unfortunately, this rarely happens.

When we start seeing blurry and weaker, it usually turns out that we need glasses to wear every day or for reading or watching TV. Eyesight, of course, has the right to deteriorate over the years, but its condition is greatly affected by the so-called. eye hygiene, or rather its neglect. There are a number of everyday, seemingly innocent behaviors that can make our vision worse and worse. Make sure you don’t make basic mistakes and you don’t strain your eyes!

  1. Natural light – proper lighting is the key to maintaining healthy eyesight. Especially when working in the office or activities that require “intensive looking” at home. Although sitting in semi-darkness can introduce a certain mood to the room, it needs to be properly illuminated. Natural light is the best for our eyes, but in Poland we don’t have enough of it (except in the summer, but not always), so we have to use artificial light. It cannot be too weak, too sharp or too intense. If we work at a desk, it should have additional lighting, e.g. a special lamp.
  2. Distance from the monitor and time spent at the computer – the way you work at a computer screen or watch TV is also important. The room should be lit, the monitor should not be exposed to sunlight, and the distance between the eyes should be between 50 and 70 cm. While working, let’s close our eyes for at least 5 seconds from time to time. A 10-minute break, during which we will go for a walk, is also good.
  3. Eat what’s good for your eyes – the best will be products rich in antioxidants, especially those from the group of carotenoids. Your diet should be rich in green and orange vegetables and fruits. Eat foods that contain vitamin A to prevent night blindness, vitamin C to protect against glaucoma, and lutein and zeaxanthin to bind free radicals in the retina and protect it from damage.
  4. Watch out for the sun – sunlight reaching the eyes is harmful ultraviolet rays that harm both our skin and eyes. Under the influence of the sun, free radicals are formed, so you should protect your eyesight: on sunny days, wear a hat, cap, but good quality sunglasses with the appropriate approval and filters will work best.
  5. It’s time to quit smoking – this harmful addiction also causes a lot of damage to the eyesight. Smokers are four times more likely to develop age-related macular degeneration than non-smokers. Tobacco smoke also harms the eyes by staying in a smoky room for a long time.
  6. Choose the right glasses – It’s not worth experimenting with your eyesight. Never borrow glasses from someone else, do not buy ready-made glasses in pharmacies or bazaars. You can hurt yourself more this way. If you feel that your eyesight is getting worse, contact an ophthalmologist so that he can prescribe you the right glasses.
