In everyday products, salt is often referred to as sodium benzoate, monosodium glutamate, baking soda or baking powder. Not surprisingly, it is extremely easy to exceed the recommended 2,4 g grams of sodium, which, according to the guidelines of the Polish Federation of Food Producers, is the maximum daily dose of sodium for an average adult.
We present a list of products in which salt appears in excess.
Foods with too much sodium
- Ready-made marinades, sauces for meats and salads open the forefront of products rich in salt. Consumption of two tablespoons of meat sauce will supplement 15 percent. our need for sodium, i.e. 300 mg! Whereas 20 percent demand will be filled with a tablespoon of marinade, which is not enough to prepare a dish, so it would be advisable to prepare dishes yourself, from meats to marinades.
- Cottage cheese is an invaluable source of calcium and building material – protein. However, one cup of cottage cheese contains as much as 1000 mg of sodium, which is almost half of the acceptable daily dose. For comparison, a serving of Greek yogurt contains only 60 mg.
- Cereals and wholegrain bread are considered a model of a healthy start to the day. However, we can consume up to 300 mg of sodium with them, so let’s choose between these options for breakfast, and not combine them.
- We usually don’t think about the amount of salt we eat with sandwiches, cheese, cold cuts and pickles. Meanwhile, it turns out that we should, because together with such a snack we can deliver up to 900 mg of sodium to our body! Alternatively, in order to save excess of this ingredient, let’s decide to bake a chicken breast ourselves, add vegetables to taste instead of pickles and choose Swiss cheese instead of the first better one.
- Nothing is more inconspicuous in this world in terms of sodium than hot chocolate, a cup of which covers nearly 1/10 of the daily salt requirement. Cocoa with warm milk and the addition of cinnamon will be much better for our health.
- Let’s prepare sweet pastries ourselves at home, instead of buying ready-made cakes packed in supermarkets, because salt is abused to preserve them. One bud contains up to 200 mg, and this is just the icing on the cake of salted products that we reach for during the day. In addition, let’s remember about unnecessarily absorbed trans fats and a lot of calories.
Don’t overdo it because…
Excessive consumption of sodium significantly increases our susceptibility to civilization diseases, such as hypertension, stroke, stroke, atherosclerosis or circulatory failure. Moreover, accustomed to excessive salting and lack of physical activity, we can expect complications not only from the circulatory system, but also from the digestive tract in stressful situations.
