Discontinuation of birth control pills – side effects

Contraceptive pills are one of the most popular methods of protection against unplanned pregnancy. The use of pills should be a well-thought-out decision, preceded by tests of hormone levels, and the discontinuation of contraceptive pills must be similar. Taking hormonal pills should be a process that takes place from the very beginning under the supervision of a gynecologist, but their discontinuation does not require tests, tests is enough for the decision of the woman who should do it consciously due to possible side effects. Therefore, discontinuation of the contraceptive pill should be preceded by informing the patient about what may happen after discontinuation of the pill.

Discontinuation of the pill may be due to various reasons, each discontinuation decision is an individual decision. Since the current contraceptive pill contains quite high levels of hormones, many women decide to stop taking hormonal pills for health reasons. Another reason is the decision to plan pregnancy, and the woman’s body must have time to recover after hormonal treatment. It happens that a woman decides to stop taking birth control pills due to the fact that she begins to feel worse during the treatment, which may mean that the pills were incorrectly selected or the hormonal treatment should be replaced with other agents. In such situations, the decision that you should stop taking hormone pills or patches should be made by the gynecologist.

How should we stop taking birth control pills? First of all, it is recommended that you stop taking the agent after completing the series. Discontinuation of the pill should not be associated with difficult side effects, but there may be changes in the way the body functions as the body has become accustomed to taking regular doses of hormones. Therefore, the hormonal balance can be disturbed, and this affects the well-being of a woman.

Discontinuation of birth control pills is characterized, first of all, by disturbances in the menstrual cycle.

  1. complete absence of the period after the withdrawal of hormones
  2. delays in the onset of menstruation
  3. irregular period

Some women may have heavy and painful periods when discontinuing the tablets. After about half a year, the hormonal balance should rebuild and all disturbed processes return to normal, which is also an individual matter and some women return to balance much faster. It is very important to know that the first withdrawal bleeding is not a true menstruation and is called discontinuation spotting, which may occur between days 2 and 4 after discontinuation. Real menstruation may not appear until the second cycle after stopping the pills.
