“Disaster” in North Korea. The “elixir of life” appeared in pharmacies

They call it “fever” and treat it … Exactly, how? North Korea, often referred to as the world’s most closed country, has not admitted medical missions and vaccines. Moreover, it wasn’t until May of this year that she admitted she was struggling with COVID-19. Unofficial reports portend the impending disaster.

  1. North Korea has argued for two years that they do not have the COVID-19 pandemic. It reported the alleged first case in May 2022, but did not specify where the infection suddenly came from
  2. The country has around 1,5 million cases of COVID-19, according to the Western media. According to their reports, there are no intensive care stations, tests and medications. North Korean propaganda claims that pharmacies have found a drug called “the elixir of life”. There is no information about what this substance is
  3. The lockdown reports are also contradictory. The new information shows that the country is functioning as before, with the limitations of the mask type or temperature measurement
  4. While Western experts are predicting an epidemic catastrophe and high mortality rates, Kim Jong Un has secretly accepted China’s help. Regime planes were to fly for medical supplies

What do we know about the situation in this isolated place, apart from the version provided by the regime itself? The media publish a lot of unofficial information, from South Korean intelligence or anonymous sources. Recently, there have been many leaks about the fight against the coronavirus in North Korea. The reports are dramatic.

COVID-19 in North Korea. The “elixir of life” was to be delivered to pharmacies

Certainly North Korea is fighting the coronavirus … propaganda. The Guardian reports that COVID-19 is portrayed in the regime’s media as an enemy that can be defeated with proper discipline.

According to a North Korean agency, citizens are under special campaigns encouraged to wear face masks and maintain social distancing. The dictator himself set an example. Kim Jong Un, whom the regime television showed in a mask on the day of the announcement of the first COVID-19 case in the country.

The state news agency (KCNA) reported deliveries of undefined drugs – the “elixir of life” – to pharmacies. The medications are to be distributed by the military. Western media, however, write about the lack of drugs and intensive care stations.

“The situation is very bad,” said Owen Miller, a Koreanist at the University of London, in the Guardian. – «They are facing a maddening wave of the Omikron variant, without the protection of COVID-19 vaccinations, without greater – if not any – population immunity, without access to most of the drugs that have been used to treat COVID-19 in other countries »- he drew a black vision.

To China for help

According to the latest unofficial information from the expert portal NK News and the South Korean news agency Yonhap, several planes flew in secret from North Korea to China. They were going to get medical help. China, for its part, has promised to “go all out” on such aid. It is worth noting that the planes were to provide supplies, not medics.

Commentators speculate that the leader is willing to accept a certain number of casualties as long as he does not let outsiders enter the country. Due to the shortcomings in the medical sector, as well as the situation in the country (COVID-19 found Koreans exhausted by the hunger that is waging the country), the death rate from COVID-19 will probably be much higher than in other countries. In South Korea it was 0,1 percent, in North it may be 1 percent. Predicts Jung Jae-hun, professor at Gachon University. He is echoed by prof. Kim Sin-gon from Seoul, who predicts the highest morbidity and mortality per population. It also draws attention to the weakening of Koreans, who often live in tragic conditions, which of course translates into resistance.

Lockdown? Not necessarily

Earlier, there were reports that the country was under a lockdown. NK News reported on the panic that broke out in Pyongyang. People began to stockpile it.

Now, Asia Press reports, quoted by The Guardian, show that the situation is, to put it mildly, far from a lockdown. There are shops and workplaces, there are no restrictions on going outside. An anonymous official described that people were even more worried about closing their jobs than about falling ill.

In factories, however, the temperature is to be measured (at the entrance and exit), and people leaving the house are reportedly instructed to wear two masks.
