Martyna Chmielewska / Medexpress: How many patients are currently in the National Hospital?

Artur Zaczyński, MD, PhD: There are 93 patients out of 112 ready-made beds at the National Hospital. The hospitals contacted us 62 times over the course of five days. 45 people were admitted to hospitalization. The total number of hospitalized people has been 350 since the beginning of its operation.

What is the health of patients?

We are observing the beginning of the third wave. More and more patients who undergo the light course of the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus come to us. We increase our resources. Some patients are discharged, others stay with us longer. The rotation is quite high.

Were there deaths in the National Hospital due to coronavirus infection?

Not. Fortunately, we have not had such a case yet. Any patient whose health deteriorates is transferred to a temporary intensive care unit. If necessary, it is connected to a ventilator. He is hospitalized under temporary conditions until a place is found for him in one of the intensive care units of a standard hospital in Warsaw, in line with the strategy. Most patients are transferred to the home hospital.

Are there any places for patients at the National Hospital?

There are some free seats. We have 128 beds ready.

What problems is the National Hospital facing?

We have no problems at present. The hospital was created on the basis of the experience of the parent hospital. All the things that could not be implemented at the CSK Hospital of the Ministry of Interior and Administration in Warsaw due to technological limitations were implemented in the National Hospital as far as possible. For example, medics in the clean zone at the central point of drug preparation prepare pharmaceuticals in an apron, mask, protective gloves without coveralls. Appropriately labeled drugs ready for administration go to the contaminated zone. Various types of processes have been adapted to make the work of the staff as efficient as possible.

How do you assess the epidemiological situation in our country?

The epidemiological situation in our country is getting worse. We see an increasing tendency towards morbidity in society. In Great Britain, infections due to a new, contagious mutation of the coronavirus are skyrocketing. I am afraid that in a week or two weeks a similar situation awaits us….

What are your biggest concerns regarding the coronavirus outbreak?

I am afraid to silence the vigilance of citizens. I am afraid that people will not distance themselves, they will not wear masks. I think as a result of the decline in the number of cases, people will not be diagnosed with COVID-19. They’ll pretend it’s not a coronavirus, it’s just the usual cold. They will not isolate themselves. Storing the coronavirus in the privacy of your home can increase transmission of the virus. We must adhere to the epidemiological rules in order to successfully fight the pandemic.

  1. New variants of the coronavirus in Europe. WHO speaks of an “alarming situation” and is appealing

We are approaching the first anniversary of the coronavirus epidemic in Poland. I am afraid that the full wave that started in western Europe in February will be in full splendor in our country. The virus will not give us a chance to fill all kinds of shortcomings. We must be fully prepared to fight the coming third coronavirus wave.
