The blend of this whiskey was created in 1893, for which the designers of Distillery Company Limited came up with a personalized bottle – rounded, with “dents” in the glass that are comfortable for the hand. The name of the hood was associated with the original design decision: Dimple is translated from English as a “hole” or “deepening”. Scotch was created in a company that belonged to one of the oldest families in Scotland – Haig. And although a lot of time and changes have passed since then, the name of the Haigs is still mentioned in the title: in Britain itself and in the States, whiskey is called Haig Dimple.
Historical reference. The oldest distillery in Scotland, Cameronbridge, was built by twenty-year-old John Haig in 1824 and was the first distillery to produce a grain drink. The main whiskey of the distillery is still single grain (single grain) Cameron Brig.
John Haig was a driven young man with good managerial skills and business sense. He was one of the first to actively popularize blended scotch and promote the idea of consolidating Scottish producers. It was with his participation in 1877 that the 6 largest producers in Scotland at that time united – the Distillery Company Limited was created. Haig himself became the director of the company.
The Cameronbridge distillery at the time produced both grain and malt whiskey, using combinations of the two to create blended scotches. In 1929, the distillery switched to the production of an exclusively grain drink. And malt spirits for blends were purchased from other distilleries included in the DCL.
Since 2000, Distillery Company Limited has become part of the British alcohol giant Diageo. Cameronbridge remains the largest distillery in Scotland, producing 30 million imperial gallons (140 million liters) of spirits annually. Grain spirits are used, in addition to Dimple, in blends by Johnnie Walker, J&B, White Horse, Bell’s, and other Diageo drinks.
Interesting Facts
In addition to the “dents” on the glass, the design of Dimple whiskey has another important distinguishing detail – the bottle is manually braided with a thin golden mesh. Initially, the purpose of braiding was to hold the cork. When the cork was modernized, it began to simply twist, the wire mesh remained only an aesthetically attractive element.
The Dimple blend features 32 malt whiskeys, the main ones being Glenkinchie and Linkwood.
“Dimple” is very popular in the US, but there it has its own name: Haig Dimple Pinch. Pinch – in English “clamp”, which also refers to the design and shape of the bottle, which is convenient to squeeze in your hand. But scotch tape for Americans is also distinguished by increased strength – 43%.
“Dimple” gained the status of a cult drink in the United States when the TV series “Breaking Bad” (Breaking Bad) was released, the main character of which, Walter White, ordered only it in a bar: “Haig Dimple Pinch – clean!”
Contrary to the description of Ian Fleming, only one cinematic hero willingly drinks his favorite cocktail – vodka, martini, lemon zest. This is done with pleasure by the youngest agent 007 – Daniel Craig. But the first performer of the role, Sir Sean Connery, on the screen and in life prefers scotch tape – as befits a Scot. In the frame, he now and then came across with a glass of whiskey or a bottle of Dimple.
