“Table 5” belongs to the category of therapeutic, gentle diets. The main difference between therapeutic nutrition and diets for weight loss is in the strictest abstinence from the use of certain foods in order to quickly and completely recover after undergoing operations or with certain chronic diseases. In the medical “dictionary” of such therapeutic diets, as a rule, a number is assigned – “table number such and such” – depending on the type of disease. So the diet “table 5” is designed specifically for people suffering from diseases of the gallbladder and liver, as well as a chronic form of pancreatitis.

Diet “Table 5” requires you to be disciplined and responsible in principle in the matter of food choices. After all, your well-being directly depends on your selectivity – therefore, it makes sense to approve the lists of products “what you can” and “what not” with your doctor (taking into account your usual diet) and then memorize “by heart” …

Diet “Table 5”: who needs it

We have already mentioned that the Table 5 diet was specially developed by physicians for people with liver disease. The main indications for prescribing this therapeutic diet are:

  • chronic hepatitis;

  • acute hepatitis and cholecystitis during the recovery period;

  • chronic cholecystitis;

  • cirrhosis of the liver;

  • cholelithiasis.

The most important goal of prescribing a therapeutic diet number 5 is the introduction of a full, gentle nutrition, aimed at restoring the functions of the liver and biliary tract and improving bile secretion. As practice shows, this goal is achieved by the overwhelming number of patients, whose willpower and desire to be healthy allow them to strictly adhere to the prescribed menu.

The Table 5 diet provides a normal intake of carbohydrates and proteins, but with some fat restrictions. Foods containing purines (substances whose high concentration leads to the formation of an increased amount of uric acid in the body and, as a result, to gout), extractive substances, cholesterol, essential oils, oxalic acid, and foods with fats oxidized during frying are excluded from the diet …

With the “Table 5” diet, foods rich in fiber (vegetables, fruits, cereals), lipotropic substances (lean meat and fish, egg white, low-fat cottage cheese, soy), pectins (for example, apples), as well as unsweetened liquids are added to the daily diet … All dishes are either boiled or baked and rarely stewed. Frying is excluded. And no cold food, just warm or slightly hot.

Diet “Table 5”: do’s and don’ts

Since the diet belongs to the category of therapeutic, accurate and detailed lists of what you can and cannot do on this diet, you will be drawn up by a doctor – taking into account the peculiarities of your disease, your eating habits and region of residence. But a more or less general picture of the diet with the “Table 5” diet looks like this:

Bread and flour products:

  • One can: Yesterday’s baked bread from 1st and 2nd grade wheat flour and rye from peeled and seeded flour. Baked pies with apples, cottage cheese, meat and fish.

  • Must not: fresh bread, fried pies, pastry and puff pastry.

Meat and poultry:

  • One can: lean meat without tendons and veins, poultry without skin. Beef, pork, lamb, rabbit, turkey and chicken. Pilaf with boiled meat, stuffed cabbage and boiled sausages.

  • Must not: fatty meat, brains, kidneys, liver, goose, duck, canned food, sausages and smoked meats.

A fish:

  • One can: low-fat varieties boiled or baked after boiling.

  • Must not: fatty varieties, canned food, salted and smoked fish.

Soups:

  • One can: dairy with pasta, vegetables and cereals on a decoction of vegetables, borsch and cabbage soup without meat, beetroot and fruit soups. Vegetables and flour for making soups are not fried, but dried.

  • Must not: all soups based on meat, fish and mushrooms, as well as green cabbage soup and okroshka.

Dairy:

  • One can: kefir, milk, yogurt, low-fat and semi-fat cottage cheese and products from it, sour cream (as a seasoning), acidophilus, low-fat and mild cheese.

  • Must not: full-fat milk, cream, fat cottage cheese, fermented baked milk, sour cream, fatty and salty cheese.

Eggs:

  • One can: protein omelet, soft-boiled egg, up to 1 yolk per day in dishes.

  • Must not: fried and boiled eggs.

Vegetables:

  • One can: vegetables in raw, boiled and stewed form, as well as salads and side dishes from them. Boiled onions, mashed peas and non-sour sauerkraut.

  • Must not: sorrel, green onions, radishes, spinach, mushrooms and garlic, as well as all pickled vegetables.

Sweets and fruits:

  • One can: all fruits and berries (non-acidic), dried fruits, jelly, compotes, mousses, jellies, marmalade, marshmallow, jam, sweets without chocolate, honey.

  • Must not: chocolate, ice cream and cream products.

Beverages:

  • One can: tea, coffee with milk, juices from vegetables, berries and fruits, rosehip decoctions.

  • Must not: cocoa, black coffee and all cold drinks.

Lists listing what you can and cannot on the Table 5 diet can be expanded to the limits you need – ask your doctor about all the foods and dishes that you like and prefer, and categorize them yourself. After all, we are all different: someone loves to eat a ripe mango every day, someone cannot live without herring oil, and serve sweet popcorn to their favorite TV series for others …

But if you have a disease associated with the work of the liver, you will have to strictly adjust your menu, not only taking into account your gastronomic preferences, but also taking into account medical recommendations.

Basic “rules of the game” on the “Table 5” diet

Diet table number 5 plays a key role in the treatment of liver diseases. In addition to the above features, diet 5 is also distinguished by some important regime nuances, for example:

  • foods that can increase acid formation in the stomach are in no way allowed in the diet (for example, canned food and marinades, spicy dishes, rye flour products, too fatty rich broths);

  • the diet menu table 5 should be distinguished by a high protein content and limit the intake of carbohydrates and fats (here it makes sense to look at the menu of the standard protein diet);

  • all dishes for the diet “table number 5” are prepared in a steam, chopped or mashed form (fried, grilled is completely excluded);

  • you need to eat in small portions, but often enough, at least 6-7 times a day;

  • and in no case should you allow the appearance of a feeling of hunger!
