Colitis is an inflammation of the lining of the colon. Signs of illness include pain in the navel, diarrhea alternating with constipation, bloating, decreased appetite, and nausea. The effect of the drugs prescribed by the doctor will be only if a therapeutic diet is followed.

A diet for colitis is aimed at restoring intestinal motility, eliminating unpleasant symptoms of the disease and increasing the production of enzymes necessary for normal digestion. In the acute period of the disease, when the intestinal mucosa is inflamed, dietary restrictions should be especially severe. In the presence of diarrhea, only white crackers, jelly, unsweetened black tea and fermented milk products (cottage cheese, yogurt, kefir) can be included in the diet.

If flatulence occurs after consuming fermented milk products in the acute phase of the disease, it is better to exclude them from the diet until the condition stabilizes and the state of health improves

As you feel better, your diet can be expanded. Since at this stage of the disease, diarrhea, as a rule, is replaced by constipation, it is necessary to include foods rich in plant fiber in the menu.

  • Prune
  • wholemeal bread with bran
  • carrot
  • fresh juices

With good tolerance of the listed dishes, the menu can be gradually expanded by adding slimy cereals, mashed soups, rye and wheat bran to the diet. Such a diet should be followed until all signs of the disease disappear.

With colitis, bran can be consumed both dry and diluted in hot water to a mushy state. In the absence of pain per day, it is allowed to eat up to 5-8 tablespoons of bran

The diet for chronic colitis is aimed at stabilizing the condition and preventing recurrence of the disease. You need to eat 5-6 times a day. Serving sizes should be kept small. Food must be thoroughly chewed or chopped with a blender.

The daily diet should contain lean meats and fish, as well as poultry dishes. Fermented milk products, steamed vegetables and rice, cereals will be useful. For fruits, bananas are allowed, as well as peeled apples and pears. In addition, you must consume at least two liters of liquid per day (fruit drinks, herbal decoctions, teas, water).

For the prevention of exacerbations, it is useful to consume rice broth or oatmeal at least once a day. They contain B vitamins and fiber, which are well absorbed by the body even in a severe stage of the disease.

Regardless of the state of health and the stage of the disease, it is necessary to exclude fatty, smoked, spicy and salty foods, as well as herbs, spices and alcohol from the diet. Carbonated drinks and instant foods are also contraindicated.
