Due to the spread of the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus, which causes the COVID-19 disease, there is a lot of “good advice” in Europe and Poland regarding the use of dietary supplements, minerals and vitamins to protect against the coronavirus. The position on this matter was taken by the Polish Society of Dietetics.

Supplements are not going to help you fight the coronavirus

The Polish Society of Dietetics in its position on nutrition in the prevention and treatment of COVID-19 clearly writes:

So far, there is no scientific evidence supporting the effectiveness of using specific nutritional supplements, minerals and / or vitamins to protect against the coronavirus.

The position of the Polish Society of Dietetics appeared as a response to the constantly emerging information about the effectiveness of certain types of diets or dietary supplements in preventing SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus infections.

PTD emphasizes that a properly balanced and varied diet provides essential nutrients that support the functioning of the immune system. Patients with special nutritional needs should follow the individual recommendations of a doctor and a dietitian.

Supplementation and SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus infection

Vitamins and minerals contained in products that we eat every day affect our immunity. However, this does not mean that taking dietary supplements that are not medicinal products will protect us from the SARS-CoV-19 coronavirus. Vitamin D, which we often use in the fall and winter and early spring, improves immunity, but there are no studies showing that it can protect us from SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus infection, and even less cure diseases COVID-19. It is worth consulting your doctor about taking vitamin D. Let’s choose a preparation that is a drug, not a dietary supplement.

The same is the case with vitamin C, which is advertised as a remedy for colds and flu. There is also information that it protects against the coronavirus. However, there is no scientific research that confirms this.

How to reduce the risk of SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus infection? Wash your hands often with soap and water, use hand sanitizers if you cannot wash them. Avoid being in the crowd, if you can stay home, cover your mouth with your elbow when coughing and sneezing, and daily disinfect items and surfaces that you use frequently. Avoid touching your face with your hands. Eat healthy, avoid alcohol and highly processed foods.
