Zinc is one of the basic chemical elements, which is also the basic microelement present in human enzymes. It mediates many metabolic changes, it is an indispensable part of regulatory proteins or transcription factors. Zinc itself was discovered in 1746, but its biological significance was only described in 1957.

Zinc in the human body

  • Important for the metabolism of the human body
  • It helps in the mineralization of bones, strengthens them
  • It affects the secretion of insulin
  • Helps regulate cholesterol and vitamin A levels
  • Regulates heart rhythm and blood pressure (strengthens the heart and circulatory system)
  • Supports the work of the immune system
  • Helps in wound healing
  • The building material of the so-called “zinc fingers” necessary for DNA

Zinc in the diet

To provide your body with the right amount of zinc, you should consume about 15-20 mg of this microelement daily. At a minimum, however, you should consume about 5 mg of zinc per day, with only about 10-40% of the consumed zinc being absorbed by the body.

When there is not enough zinc in the body …

  • … wounds heal much more difficult
  • … growth is stunted (this is extremely important in children!)
  • … birth defects appear
  • … there are frequent inflammations and changes in the skin, diarrhea, loss of appetite
  • … anemia occurs

Interestingly, zinc deficiency in adults can lead to olfactory and taste disorders. Zinc deficiency can be caused by alcohol abuse, birth control pills and certain medications.

When is zinc needed? Treatment!

Zinc helps in the treatment of rheumatism. It also copes well with all kinds of ulcers, skin diseases and stomach ulcers. Prevents the formation of varicose veins. In adolescents and young adults, it can soothe the changes that occur with skin lesions (acne).

Zinc also helps in the treatment of flu and colds by strengthening the function of the immune system. Participates in the response to infections and treats fungal infections. It helps in the treatment of conjunctivitis.

Zinc and fertility

Importantly, zinc is also recommended for problems and diseases related to fertility. It regulates female menstruation and prevents prostate diseases in men. It increases fertility in both sexes, it is recommended for periodic problems in this area.

Zinc for autumn blues

A very important function of this microelement is also mediation in the work of the nervous system. In this way, zinc consumed in appropriate amounts protects a person against depression and schizophrenia, but also improves overall intellectual performance and concentration. In the elderly, it can help treat or prevent dementia.
