Diastema – what it is, causes, treatment

Diastema is the scientific name for a gap – an empty space – between groups of teeth in some mammals. In humans, diastema is defined as the gap between the top ones.

The causes of diastema formation

Diastemadepending on the cause of its formation, it may be alleged or true. Diastema true is caused by an overgrowth of the upper lip frenulum (vertical fold connecting the upper lip with the gum). Diastema Pseudo-incisors occur when the lateral incisors are reduced (microdontia) or absent. Sometimes it also occurs as a result of the growth of an additional tooth (so-called mesiodens), which is poorly arranged and pressing on the incisors, leads to the formation of diastemy. Separation of the teeth and formation diastemy it can also occur as a result of hypodontics, i.e. too few teeth in the mouth. In children, it may arise temporarily diastema physiological in the period before the lateral incisors erupt (usually between the ages of 7 and 9), however, this condition resolves on its own, and break it is usually small.

Diastema treatment – is an orthodontic appliance necessary?

At people diastema more than 2 mm wide is considered a malocclusion – a pathological change requiring orthodontic treatment. Treatment varies depending on how the incisors align with each other. If we are dealing with diastema the real first step in treatment is the undercutting of the frenulum which is its cause. If the reason for the break is an extra tooth, it must first be removed. The rest depends on the alignment of the teeth. If the crowns of the incisors are inclined towards each other and the roots are spread apart, we speak of diastemie converging. This kind diastemy it can be cured by an orthodontist only with the use of fixed orthodontic appliances. The opposite is the case diastemy divergent – then the roots converge and the tooth crowns tilt away from each other. However, its treatment is less complicated – it can be corrected with removable orthodontic appliances. In case of diastemy parallel, in which both the roots and crowns are straight, the treatment is selected individually by the orthodontist, depending on the patient’s age and the size of the gap. If the cause diastemy there is hypodontia, you may need an implant or prosthesis.

Diastema as an aesthetic defect

If in the case of diastemy the main goal is to mask it, it is possible to perform such a treatment with porcelain veneers, which are very durable and do not discolor. It is also possible to make a special type of composite filling masking the unsightly a break.
