Diagnostics of the child’s readiness for school: advice to parents and methods, training

Arriving at school, the children will have to complete the same specific tasks within the allotted time frame. Psychologists need to determine the degree of a child’s readiness to study at school in order to understand whether he can cope with the load of the school curriculum. Different methods are used for verification.

Diagnostics of the child’s readiness for school

Before a child enters school, a school psychologist checks whether he is ready to learn. For a student to be able to assimilate the material of the school curriculum, his development must reach a certain level.

Before a child goes to school, it is necessary to find out the level of his readiness for learning.

Readiness to study is determined by several related indicators. The psychologist determines the readiness:

  • Physical. It is determined by doctors and entered into a medical record.
  • Intellectual. The development of the mind and speech of the preschooler is checked. The level of attention, imagination, memory, visual and auditory perception of information.
  • Emotional. Check the level of perseverance, impulsivity of the preschooler.
  • Social. The child’s craving for communication with peers. Ability to communicate in a team. His desire to learn.

All these indicators are studied in combination.

Methodology for checking the development of speech and logical thinking

Several pictures are placed in front of the preschooler, making up one plot. They are placed in a random order. The child is invited to lay out the pictures in the correct order and make up a story based on them. The result is evaluated like this:

  • A preschooler gets a high mark if he did everything right, or, if the pictures were laid out incorrectly, he came up with a logical story for them.
  • The average mark is given to the child who correctly laid out the pictures, but was able to compose the story only with the help of an adult.
  • Low mark – the child was unable to correctly decompose the pictures and compose a story, or the story turned out to be illogical. The child lists the objects in the pictures, but cannot associate them with the objects in other pictures.

As a result of the study, it is possible to determine the child’s vocabulary, language skills and intellectual abilities.

Tips for Parents to Prepare Your Child for Schooling

It is necessary to study with the child and train certain skills and abilities for school:

  • Memory. Tell rhymes, tongue twisters, fairy tales by heart. Retell the text from 4-5 sentences.
  • Thinking. Collect puzzles on your own. To be able to determine the sequence of events – what follows what. Be able to name items by group. For example, clothing, food, furniture.
  • Knowledge of the surrounding world. Know your last name, first name and patronymic. Know your address. Be able to distinguish colors, animals, birds, trees, seasons and more.

All this knowledge must be conveyed to the child in the form of a game, in no case forcing through force.

It is better to undergo such a diagnosis in May so that the parents have the opportunity to work with the child before the start of the school year. And if the child has shown poor results in some area, then the parents will be advised what to do in this case.
