Why is diabetes during pregnancy (gestational) dangerous for the expectant mother and baby? How can the disease be prevented? You will find the answers in this article.
Why is diabetes dangerous during pregnancy?
Too high blood sugar is harmful to the health of both mom and baby. The main risks to the fetus can be identified:
- in the early stages of development, the risk of developing pathologies is high;
- the appearance of hypoxia;
- possibly late pregnancy fading;
- the baby may grow too large, which will significantly complicate childbirth;
- malnutrition of the brain, which can lead to impaired development of intelligence.
Why is the development of diabetes during pregnancy dangerous for a woman?
- Gestosis may occur – a violation of the normal functioning of various organ systems, the cardiovascular system most often suffers first.
- Disruption of normal metabolism is possible.
- Polyhydramnios, which often leads to abnormal presentation of the fetus, premature birth, rupture of the membranes and other complications in labor.
- Pregnancy can become frozen.
- High sugar levels can lead to infections of the woman’s genitourinary system, and also contribute to infection of the fetus.
- There is a likelihood of a violation of carbohydrate metabolism and poisoning of the body of a pregnant woman.
- Can cause serious complications – leading to serious vision and kidney problems.
If you experience symptoms of diabetes during pregnancy, you should immediately consult a doctor. You cannot try to cope with the problem on your own, this can lead to serious consequences.
Diabetes in Pregnancy: A Healthy Diet
To avoid possible risks and complications, a special diet is required:
- it is better to eat often, but eat small portions;
- remove quickly digestible carbohydrates from the diet, which contribute to a rapid increase in blood sugar. This category includes sweets, pure sugar, all kinds of sweet pastries;
- when symptoms of diabetes appear during pregnancy, it is necessary to reduce the amount of fat consumed, which, with a lack of insulin, can cause poisoning. Minimize the consumption of heavy cream, meat, butter;
- eating more fiber-rich foods;
- bananas, grapes and melons are prohibited from fruits.
Feasible physical activity is required. If all the recommendations of a specialist are followed, the prognosis is favorable.
