Diabetes and vacations: tips for safe travel
Before departure: consult your doctor
Before you fly to distant horizons, remember to visit your doctor and / or diabetologist:
To adapt your treatment.
Depending on the type of trip and the destination chosen, your treatment may need to be adapted, whether you are taking pharmaceuticals or insulin. The balance of your diabetes, which involves checking your glycated hemoglobin level, will determine whether or not it is safe to go on vacation.
To build up a complete first aid kit.
Anti-diarrhea, antiemetics (antivomitives) and possibly antibiotics; it is necessary to face the small inconveniences of the trip! Depending on your destination, antimalarial treatment or vaccination may also be prescribed. If these preventive treatments are not contraindicated in diabetics, however, remember to consult sufficiently before your departure for them to be effective!
To have the necessary prescriptions and certificates.
In order to be able to face all the unforeseen events (theft / loss of luggage, etc.) it is better to bring a relief order, including if possible the name of the molecule (INN = International Nonproprietary Name, name usually found on generic drugs). Likewise, have a hospital report or a document containing your medical history can be useful when going on an adventure. Finally, we cannot repeat it enough, your diabetic card (and pump carrier, if applicable) should accompany you, wherever you are!
