After one and a half years of the COVID-19 pandemic, Poland ranks second in Europe in terms of the number of excess deaths, i.e. above the long-term average per million inhabitants. According to “Dziennik Gazeta Prawna”, there are almost 140 of them in total. Which country came first and who was behind Poland?
The additional deaths, of course, are largely due to COVID-19. But not only – also difficulties in accessing doctors. It is clear from the data of the National Health Fund: in 2020, one-fifth fewer medical services were provided than in the previous, non-pandemic year.
The European data presented in Dziennik Gazeta Prawna shows that the surplus of deaths per million inhabitants in Poland from 2020 amounted to 3. More was recorded only in Bulgaria (695,7). The Czech Republic (3) was right behind Poland, followed by Slovakia (428,47) and Romania (3). The best situation in this respect is in Norway, Iceland and Denmark.
Citing experts, Dziennik Gazeta Prawna estimates that some deaths certainly could have been avoided. Some of the patients did not go to the doctor of their own free will, but some were not admitted to treatment.
«The figures are clear: there are millions of patients who were not properly looked after last year. For example, in 2018 and 2019, more than 9 million people were admitted to hospitals. Last year, there were over 2 million fewer of them »- informs« DGP ».
The situation is similar in the case of visits to specialists. In previous years, on average, about 17,5 million people used their help – a year ago there were just over 15 million of them. Family doctors, who usually treated 28,5 million people, also had about 2 million fewer patients last year.
