Dexatussin for a dry cough. Composition and dosage of the syrup

Dexatussin is a drug used in the treatment of dry cough of various origins, which is not associated with residual secretions in the respiratory tract. The preparation contains dextromethorphan hydrobromide and auxiliary substances in the form of sorbitol or tropical fruit aroma. The drug does not contain sucrose and can therefore be taken by diabetics. Dexatussin is a syrup to be taken by mouth and is available without a prescription.

Dexatussin – indications for admission and dosage

Dexatussin syrup is recommended for use in dry cough of various origins, not related to the residual secretions in the respiratory tract.

Drug dosage

Dexatussin is a syrup to be taken by mouth. Do not exceed 120 mg / day (i.e. 60 ml of syrup / day).

  1. Adults and children after 12 years of age 30 mg (i.e. 15 ml of syrup) every 6-8 h or 10-20 mg (i.e. 5-10 ml of syrup) every 4 h.

Dexatussin and contraindications

There are the following contraindications to the use of Dexatussin:

  1. hypersensitivity to any component of the preparation,
  2. bronchial asthma and other obstructive airways diseases,
  3. respiratory failure,
  4. severe liver failure,
  5. treatment with MAO inhibitors concurrently or within the last 14 days,
  6. simultaneous use of mucolytics.

Dexatussin – warnings

  1. If the cough persists or recurs after 7 days, and the disease is associated with fever, headache or rash (see a doctor in this case), there is a cough with discharge (there may be complications due to secretions in the respiratory tract) – exercise caution.
  2. In people with hepatic impairment and in patients over 60 years of age, caution should be exercised and the dose of the drug should be reduced.
  3. Patients with fructose intolerance should not take this medicine because it contains sorbitol.
  4. The sodium benzoate contained in the drug may cause allergic reactions.
  5. Dexatussin can be taken by diabetics because it does not contain sucrose.
  6. Pregnant women may take the drug only after consulting a doctor and if absolutely necessary.
  7. Nursing women should not take Dexatussin.
  8. People driving motor vehicles should be careful, because the preparation may lead to side effects in the form of dizziness, headaches and drowsiness, which impair psychophysical fitness.

Dexatussin with other drugs

  1. Do not take the drug simultaneously with MAO inhibitors and within 14 days to discontinue their administration.
  2. Concomitant use of Dexatussin with MAO inhibitors may cause agitation, high temperature, hallucinations and coma.
  3. Parallel taking dextromethorphan and other drugs that depress the central nervous system (antihistamines, neuroleptics, opioid analgesics and anxiolytics) may increase the effects of these drugs and dextromethorphan
  4. Dexatussin increases the effect of alcohol.

Dexatussin – side effects

When taking Dexatussin syrup, the following may appear:

  1. somnolence,
  2. dizziness,
  3. nausea,
  4. vomiting,
  5. constipation
  6. skin allergic reactions,
  7. stomach pain,
  8. very rarely psychological dependence.
