How to combine love of good nutrition and business? Anna Barsukova, founder of Organic Religion, a detox nutrition company, told how the idea came to open a business and what problems she faced on the way to success.
The story began when, after three years of living and working abroad, I decided to return to Russia. I have two degrees – legal and business management. After getting the second one, I decided it was time to apply the skills, and this is how a music school for adults appeared, which my friend and I opened together.
Time passed, and our business got stronger, but the question arose about our friendship with a friend, and the decision was made unequivocally: I decided to retire.
Then I realized that I could no longer sit still and decided to do something else. Freshly squeezed juices and detox programs have recently appeared in Russia, but this business is flourishing in the West. When I lived in America, I always drank such juices, and when I arrived, it turned out that this does not exist in Moscow. So the idea was born to do it myself.
At first I realized that I needed people, so I invited my friend, who is now the CEO of our company. Together with him, we made a business plan and received a loan for a start-up.
Now we have a small team of six people who are developing the business, and another 12 are working in production.
Since, in addition to our advice, there must be an expert in this kind of business, we brought in an American nutritionist Tara Ostrow, who gives advice and helps to develop programs.
How I had to promote my business
It all started with word of mouth, we also created our own Instagram page and started collaborating with publications, which helped us create a client base. Now there are even stellar clients among our buyers.
Who comes up with cocktail recipes
Tara is one of the most sought after nutritionists in the United States. She specializes in healthy eating, weight management, sports nutrition and is a nutritional consultant for sports clubs such as the New York Giants, Monaco FC and the New York Red Bulls.
She is smart about the production and technology of juice production. We come up with a recipe, test it on friends and acquaintances, and then refine the technology. To create one course, at least 7 kilograms of vegetables and fruits are required, which we process by cold pressing.
With the delivery of the course, we attach a special instruction in which the client can read everything about us, about the program and juices. I am sure that detox is necessary for every person.
About the difficulties of your business
At first, it was difficult to explain to customers what it is and what detox is for, what is the difference between ordinary freshly squeezed juices and cold-pressed juices.
But then the fashion for proper nutrition began to gain momentum, and in this regard, competitors appeared. But I take them calmly, because I love my business and I think our juices are the best. I am 100% confident in our technology.
How the crisis affected business
Negatively. Prices for fruits and vegetables have increased, purchasing power has decreased. Some ingredients have disappeared from the market altogether, and we are looking for alternatives.
But we will by no means save on our products. We keep our sales at the same level. This makes me happy!
Quality and professionalism! We are smart about product development, come up with new ideas and never stop there.
For example, now we are thinking about how to make the juices stored longer than 48 hours in order to develop not only on the territory of Moscow and the Moscow Region, but throughout Russia.
Grow and develop. Open representative offices in other cities and countries. We plan to expand the line and launch a lactose-free milk line, as well as the delivery of boxes with healthy food. We follow Western trends and try to keep up with them.
