Dessert cherry variety Morozova
20 years ago, T. Morozova, a researcher at VNII, developed a new hybrid – Dessertnaya cherry. This variety of drupes has several features: an unusual taste for cherries and early ripeness of fruits.
The height of the tree is average. It grows no more than 3 m. The crown is spreading and round. Leaves are light green. In spring, large white flowers bloom on the branches. The fruits are large, can reach a weight of 5 grams. The skin is red with small dark specks visible through it. The pulp is also red in color, juicy, tender and very sweet. Acid is almost completely absent. The taste is more like a cherry.
The drupe contains ascorbic acid – 10 mg per 100 g of fruit, sugar – about 13%, acids – less than 1%. The fruit is rich in vitamins and minerals. It can be eaten fresh, dried, canned.
Features of Morozova cherry:
- fruits do not deteriorate during long-term transportation;
- the tree gives an annual bountiful harvest – up to 50-60 centners per hectare;
- early ripening variety – drupes ripen in June;
- the tree is resistant to diseases and tolerates frost well.
Cherry variety “Dessertnaya” bears fruit in the 3rd or 4th year after planting a young plant in the ground. Drupes mostly ripen on annual branches.
Caring for the “Dessertnaya” cherry variety
Cherry Morozova reproduces well with green cuttings. Up to 70% of young plants sprout. You can also plant grafted trees. The Vladimirskaya cherry variety is ideal for this.
Cherries are best planted in the spring immediately after the snow melts. For planting, you need to choose open, well-lit places. The soil should be light, well-drained and slightly acidic. You can add sand or peat to the hole. Then the soil will be looser and lighter. Lime will help lower its acidity.
Dessert variety Morozova is partially self-fertile. For cross-pollination and harvesting, you need to plant cherries of other varieties next to this tree.
This cherry variety does not tolerate drought well. Therefore, the ground under the plant must be watered regularly. The soil around the young tree is periodically loosened and weeds are removed. When the plant begins to bear fruit, it can be fed. In spring, nitrogen-containing fertilizers are used, at the time of flowering – potash, and in August – phosphorus. Every year, damaged branches are cut from the tree and long shoots are shortened.
Cherry variety, created by T. Morozova, is ideal for growing in private plots. It does not require special care and annually pleases with sweet and juicy fruits.
