Desire differs from mere wanting by deliberation. It doesn’t take much to want: as long as the body is alive, it always wants something: move or lie down, drink or pee. She saw a beautiful handbag — she wanted it, he saw a beautiful woman — she wanted it.
Will desire turn into desire, will it be blessed by the mind? — it depends only on the person, on his views and values. Not all people are inclined to think everything over, many are accustomed to acting impulsively, to live without including their heads. A considerable part of people think about their desires formally, easily deceiving themselves and easily proving that everything they want is just what they need. The phenomenon of rationalization has been known for a long time: if they wish, smart people can always justify the reasonableness of their desires. Nevertheless, you should not confuse your Wishlist and your desires: you are responsible for your Wishlist no more than for the presence or absence of appetite, and an adult is responsible for his desires in the same way as for his choices.
Wishlist is the space of our childhood, and desires are already our youth. Turning our desires into goals and projects, we become adults.
Some of our desires are derivatives of our addictions. Desire is free, dependence turns us into a slave.
The addict wants drugs. Alcoholic — get drunk. Loudeman is a slot machine. Casanova — bab. A glutton is a stocked refrigerator.
The more developed a person, the less addictions and more desires.
(Moderate) difficulties contribute to the kindling of the power of desire. The harder it is to get what you want, the more desirable it becomes. At least for energetic people it is. A vivid capture of the desired often turns it into a fixed idea: an image that cannot be forgotten.
Yes, our desires do not always push us in the right direction. What to do in this case? Suppressing desires is not the best option, but learning to manage them is useful. There is no need to fight against wrong desires, it is smarter to arouse the right desires in yourself so that you always want what you need now. In everyday life, desires are triggered by the keys of desire, extinguished by blocks of desires, in any case, desires can both wake up and go out.
“Now I have become more stingy in desires, / My life! Or did you dream about me? Sergei Yesenin was sad. Desires live by the breath of our body, and the body tends to change its states …
But desires can not only wake up and go out, developed people know how to control their desires. It makes sense — cool, so I want it! Is it useful to me or to people nearby? Okay, I want this from the bottom of my heart. You can and should develop your desires and desires in the right direction. How? See How to develop your Want and start wanting what you need?
Desire is a craving, but not yet an action. An adult person can put aside his untimely desires, an energetic person will turn his desires into plans and actions.
Desires often remain only desires, not embodied in actions. The faster and more decisively we turn our desires into intentions, plans and projects, the more often our desires come true. A project is a well-formed desire. The project differs from desire in the specificity of the wording, the vision of at least a general implementation plan and written fixation. See Project and Goal Setting
Desires have different statuses. A low-status desire that does not have a clear justification and recognition of others is called a whim, it can be ignored. A socially approved or even more encouraged desire is called a need, while our very best desires receive the titles of Favorite work or simply our Love.
Desire and body
Desires are from the body, and when we live by desires, we live in the body, the bodily life. It’s simple: needs appear in the body (the body needs fluid). The languor of need, when it is objectified in something, becomes our Want (I already understand what I want — I want iced tea). A thoughtful and approved Want acquires the status of a Desire (I don’t just want tea, I already say this to myself and others. “Would you like tea? Yes, with lemon!”). But all desires initially live on the states of the body, and when the body ceases to need liquid, the desire for tea fades away.
However, people are not only organisms, sometimes we use the mind. And not only in order to approve or not what our body wants, but in order to organize the body for what needs to be done now. A reasonable person is no longer guided by his needs, but by his values, and simply takes into account his needs and other circumstances.
A reasonable person ceases to live by the body, he begins to use his body as an instrument. In place of needs, he has values, and in place of moods, his spirit. This is spiritual life.
And it is right!
