Care for strawberries of the “Elizaveta” variety
For strawberries, it is better to choose a sunny area with moderately moist loamy soils. The distance between the bushes should be approximately 30 cm, between the rows – 60 cm.
It is often recommended to prune the first flower to get a bountiful harvest a second time. The berries from the first harvest are small and slightly sour.
Watering should be regular, every other day, but not excessive, otherwise the roots and stems will begin to rot. If it rains constantly, it is advisable to treat the culture with phytosporin for the same reason. It is advisable to cover the soil with straw, sawdust and non-woven material. This will eliminate the excessive growth of weeds, the need for constant loosening and drying out of the soil.
Since the variety bears fruit for a long period, it needs to be fed regularly. When preparing the beds, the soil must be fertilized with phosphorus, and during the growth and development of the bushes – with nitrogen and potassium.
Strawberries need to be promptly prepared for wintering:
- cut off late flowers;
- remove fruits;
- cut off old foliage, leaving 2-3 leaves.
Strawberries of the “Elizaveta” variety are distinguished by good winter hardiness. But in order to get an early harvest, it is advisable to protect the bushes with dry shelter – straw or leaves. This must be done if the winters are frosty, but with little snow. This will keep the buds already formed in the fall from freezing.
The planting needs to be renewed approximately every 4 years, since over time the quality of the fruits deteriorates and they become small. But the yield, even in this case, remains at the same level.
