Description of the raspberry variety Phenomenon
Raspberry “Phenomenon” – a variety of Ukrainian selection, bred as a result of crossing “Odarka” and “Stolichnaya”. It is resistant to disease and bears fruit even in adverse weather conditions.
Description of raspberry “Phenomenon”
The bushes are tall, up to 3 m in height, but not very spreading. When growing raspberries of this variety, shoots must be tied to a trellis. It forms a large amount of root growth, therefore it grows quickly.
Variety characteristic:
- The shoots are prickly, the thorns are small, so they do not interfere with the harvest. Young branches are light beige, in autumn they acquire a yellow tint.
- The leaves are pubescent, dark green in color.
- The flowers are white and appear in May.
- The berries are round or cone-shaped, red, large. The first fruits weigh 8-9 g, then they become smaller, the weight is no more than 5-6 g. On young bushes, berries can grow up to 10-12 g. The pulp is sweet, dense and juicy, very aromatic. Tasting score 4,1 points out of 5.
The Phenomenon raspberry variety is mid-season. The fruits ripen massively in the second half of July. Fruiting lasts 20-25 days. The berries are not crumbled or baked in the sun.
Advantages and disadvantages of raspberry “Phenomenon”
The variety has many advantages:
- High disease resistance. Bushes rarely get sick with the common disease of raspberry gall midge.
- Good yield. You can collect 6-8 kg of berries from a bush.
- Transportability, high taste and attractive appearance of the fruit. The berries can be grown commercially.
- The survival rate of seedlings. Young bushes quickly adapt to the climate of the growing region.
- Stable fruiting, no matter hot, dry or rainy summers.
- Cold resistance. Raspberries can withstand sudden temperature changes, hibernate even in eastern Siberia. Bushes are not afraid of late spring frosts.
- Drought resistance. Bears fruit when there is a lack of moisture in the hot summer.
Despite all the listed advantages, this variety has its own disadvantages.
“Phenomenon” is prone to rot, spider mites, raspberry weevils and beetles. Pests often lead to the death of the bush, so you need to regularly carry out preventive treatment. Raspberries need constant care. The bushes thicken quickly, and with a lack of sunlight, the berries become less juicy and sweet.
Plant some Phenomenon raspberry seedlings in your area. The berries can be eaten fresh, covered for the winter, or used to make desserts.
