Description of Mulard ducks
Mulard ducks are a hybrid of male American muscovy ducks and female Peking breed. The hybrids are sterile. They are bred specifically for dietary tender meat.
Mularda are the best hybrid breed of ducks
Hybrids are easily recognizable by the black spot on the head. These ducks are larger than their parents, have a dense elongated body, they have a light beak and a medium-sized head on an elongated neck. They have a neat tail and short legs.
Hybrids may take an interest in the opposite sex, but the eggs are not fertilized. Therefore, they are bred at home or in incubators, where high-quality hybrid specimens can be obtained. Mulard are ideal birds for the household:
- they are clean, calm and good-natured;
- precocious – at the age of 3-4 months they already weigh 4 kg. With longer feeding, the ducks almost catch up with the mass of the goose;
- they have lean dietary meat;
- females and drakes do not differ much in weight: they both weigh about 5-7 kg;
- unpretentious. Mulards tolerate heat and cold, are not capricious, they are cheaper to keep than other breeds. They eat hybrids in moderation, and gain weight rapidly;
- the mass of the drake’s liver reaches 500 g. For this they are fed according to a special scheme;
- they are easy to grow. There are always ducklings or eggs on sale, it is not difficult to grow a full-fledged duck.
All these qualities make hybrids profitable for cultivation in private and industrial farms.
The disadvantages of the species include the impossibility of obtaining the next generation and poor tolerance to damp hybrids.
To get hybrid ducks, 5-6 sexually mature (7-10 months) Peking females and one musky drake are kept in the aviary. After laying eggs, they are incubated by a brood hen or an incubator is used. The hatching instinct in meat ducks is poorly expressed.
Ducklings appear in about a month. In the first days of life, they need a warm house with round-the-clock lighting. When babies adapt, the lighting is brought closer to natural.
After hatching from the eggs, the ducklings are fed with a special mixture from veterinary pharmacies. On the third day, babies can already be given a finely chopped hard egg. From 14 days of age, meat and bone meal and bran are introduced into the diet. For good growth and health, ducklings need mineral supplements – chalk, shell rock. There must be water within reach.
Plentiful food is recommended. Hybrids do not store fat, they quickly gain muscle mass
In order for the ducklings to recover quickly, the diet should consist of 20% protein. It is recommended to restrict the movement of the ducks. Since everything goes into muscle mass, the quality of the meat will not be affected.
The description of feeding mulard ducks includes different nutrition schemes that provide a quick weight gain:
- intensive – fed with special granules containing at least 17% protein;
- semi-intensive – give moist and bulk granular feed;
- extensive – give food additives with grain and roughage.
After a month and a half, ducks can graze on pastures. By the age of 4 months, hybrid ducks are feeding the required weight.
As a meat breed, mulard ducks have almost no drawbacks and are beneficial for farms.
