Description of Norway maple
Maple is a long-liver. Lives up to 150-200 years, but there are specimens that manage to live up to 250 years. For the first 30 years, the tree actively grows in height, then it grows green mass. By the age of 60, maple slows down.
The tree grows up to 20-30 m in height. Description of the variety:
- The trunk is massive. The bark is smooth, red-gray, cracks appear with age. The crown is thick.
- The leaves are five-lobed, large, up to 18 cm in diameter. The front 3 lobes are of equal length, and the other 2 are slightly smaller. Veins are visible on the leaf plate. The leaves are darker at the top and lighter at the bottom. In autumn they acquire a red or burgundy hue.
- Flowering begins in May, lasts 10 days. Flowers are collected in shield-like inflorescences of greenish-yellow color.
- The tree begins to bear fruit after 17 years of life. The fruit is a double flat lionfish that splits into 2 parts. Each has one seed.
Maple propagates by seeds, but the survival rate of seedlings is low. You can grow the tree by root shoots or grafting.
There are many varieties of maple, which are distinguished by an elegant crown – “Schwedler”, “Drummond”, “Reitenbach”, “Crimson King”, “Royal Red”, “Globozum” and others. All species are light-requiring and frost-resistant.
This species is popular for its unusual leaf color. They are purple, almost black. In autumn they take on a purple hue. The crown of the trees is very lush and dense. Maple grows up to 20 m in height.
Inflorescences are bright orange, look great against the background of dark foliage. The fruits are red. They are almost invisible.
Suitable conditions for growing maple:
- lit or slightly shaded area, protected from the wind;
- any type of soil, marshland is not suitable;
- moderate watering in hot weather.
This species is drought-resistant, therefore it is suitable for regions with hot climates. Crimson trees grow rapidly in height and breadth.
Norway maple is resistant to air pollution, so it is suitable for landscaping streets. It should be planted along the roads, it will retain exhaust gases and dust. Thanks to the beautiful crown of the maple, it can be found in parks and recreation areas.
