Derain male grows in the form of a small tree. Its distinctive feature is the yellow flowers, which are collected in small umbrellas. The tree bears fruit with edible black berries. It is during this period that the derain is especially beautiful. It is better to choose shaded places for planting. The variety is not afraid of frost.

Another woody variety is the Japanese kousa. Its peculiarity is the unusual pink fruits, which are very similar to raspberries. The tree is not frost-resistant. In Russia, it can only be successfully grown in the south. Some enterprising gardeners still breed kousa in other regions, responsibly approaching the issue of sheltering the tree before the onset of winter. If you do not live in the south, you can grow a bonsai kousa.

As a shrub, dogwood is represented by the following varieties:

  • Derain is white. It is considered the most common and popular among landscape designers. The maximum height is 3 meters. Large green leaves grow on red shoots, which acquire a rich burgundy hue with the onset of autumn. The flowering period begins in May and lasts about a half moon. At this point, the plant is covered with bunches of small white flowers. Among gardeners, the variety is famous for its winter hardiness and vitality.
  • Derain is red. The shrub reaches 4 meters in length. The branches of the plant are red, the saturation of which depends on age. The leaves are large, in autumn they turn the color of blood, which is why the variety got its name.
  • Derain canadensis is a dwarf shrub that reaches a height of only 20 centimeters. Compared to other varieties, the plant blooms for a rather long time – from June to July. In August, the bush is strewn with scarlet berries. For planting, you should choose partial shade. The variety is famous for its good frost resistance.

There are many more varieties of deren, but they are rarely used for decorative purposes.
