Although pregnancy is called one of the happiest periods in a woman’s life, this time is rich in “surprises” that relate not only to physical changes, but also emotional ones. These include depression.

Many pregnant women are prone to mood swings, but there are those who feel depressed all the time. Even the enthusiastic exclamations of friends and relatives do not help to cheer up: “Oh, it will be a boy!” Feeling her helplessness in front of the piled up negative emotions, the woman withdraws even more into herself.

According to statistics, depression during pregnancy occurs in about 10% of the fair sex.

Depression in all pregnant women manifests itself in different ways. Some complain of excessive irritability, sleep disturbances, anxiety, inability to concentrate, increased fatigue, constant hunger or a complete lack of appetite, others are constantly upset and cry. Sometimes the expectant mother even wants to commit suicide.

In most cases, this condition is attributed to hormones, but there are other reasons:

  • problems in relations with the child’s father, constant quarrels with him and, as a result, a feeling of loneliness
  • stress due to the unwillingness to accept the changes in life associated with the birth of a baby
  • toxicosis, morning sickness and other sensations that cause discomfort
  • fear of losing a child, especially if this has happened in the past
  • the presence in the family of close relatives who also often suffer from depression

In this case, it will be difficult to do without the help of a psychologist, otherwise apathy during pregnancy can develop into postpartum depression.

What to do for a depressed pregnant woman

If you suddenly start to feel depressed during pregnancy, first, relax. This is a normal desire of any mother to redo all possible things before the baby is born: to equip the nursery, to buy toys and clothes, and to stock up on diapers for a year in advance. That is unnecessary. Problems should be resolved as they arise. The most important thing is your physical and mental condition. By taking care of yourself, you are taking care of your child.

Exercise, meet with friends more often, take walks in the fresh air. Small physical activities, such as swimming or yoga, are even shown to expectant mothers.
