The Danish government announced on May 3 that it would stop vaccinating with Johnson & Johnson. The country also dropped the AstraZeneki vaccine last month due to the risk of thrombosis. Meanwhile, researchers from the Netherlands indicate that a similar decision in their country led to the death of 13 patients within 14 days.
- As reported by the European Medicines Agency (EMA), thrombosis can be a very rare side effect following the administration of the Johnson & Johnson vaccine
- According to EMA, this should not be a reason to give up vaccination with this preparation. The benefits are expected to outweigh any potential risks
- Johnson & Johnson vaccines are also administered in Poland. It was this preparation that was given to those willing during this year’s picnic

Denmark will no longer be vaccinated with Johnson & Johnson. The reason for the thrombosis
The Danish health authority announced on May 3 that the Johnson & Johnson vaccine would no longer be administered in the country. Thus, the single-dose preparation against COVID-19 joined AstraZeneka, which was withdrawn from use in Denmark in April. Currently, the Scandinavian country will only administer Pfizer and Moderna vaccines to its citizens.

Both AstraZeneki and Johnson & Johnson are vector preparations (unlike Pfizer and Moderna – mRNA-based vaccines). For the former, the European Medicines Agency (EMA) announced in April that it was related to thrombosis – but it is a very rare side effect of AstraZeneki.
The potential risk of thrombosis in the context of the Johnson & Johnson vaccine came soon after. The American CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) and the FDA (Food and Drug Administration) called for the cessation of administration of this drug to citizens. In turn, the EMA concluded that there was a possible link between the preparation and very rare cases of atypical blood clots.
However, the European Medicines Agency underlined that, as with AstraZeneki, the benefits of Johnson & Johnson also outweigh the risks of side effects.
Did the Danish government make the right decision to abandon the Johnson & Johnson vaccine?
The Danish government predicted that all adult citizens would be fully vaccinated against COVID-25 by 19 July. Giving up AstraZaneki first, and now also Johnson & Johnson, makes this scenario no longer realistic.
When other countries in April refrained from vaccinating with AstraZeneka, experts tried to cool emotions and explain why these are “exaggerated” actions.
– Let’s look at the numbers. According to English data, 1 person in 250 may have thrombosis – commented for MedTvoiLokony cardiologist dr hab. Bartosz Hudzik, MD, PhD. – The risk of thrombosis is 1 in 2 thousand annually. women using hormonal contraception and 1 in 1 thousand. passengers on long-haul flights. For comparison, according to the British Winton Center for Risk and Evidence Communication, the risk of death due to COVID-19 in the 25-year-old age group is 23 per 1 million cases, and in the 55-year-old group it is 800 per 1 million cases.

Dr hab. Hudzik stressed that in his opinion, further vaccination with AstraZeneka is the right decision.
– Following the COVID-19 vaccine, thrombotic events are statistically very rare. It’s good that we know that such a complication occurs. This allows for a quick response. I agree with the position of EMA and PTHiT. The benefits of all COVID-19 vaccines outweigh the risks. Thrombotic events, although very rare, are serious and must be kept in mind. But they should not be a reason not to vaccinate. However, it is important to properly conduct the qualification process, as well as to monitor patients after vaccination – added the cardiologist.
The Netherlands has stopped vaccinating with AstraZeneka. What are the consequences of this?
In March, the Dutch government decided to temporarily suspend vaccination with AstraZeneki. This went on for 14 days. The latest issue of The Dutch Journal of Medicine (NTvG) features an article in which Dutch scientists analyze the health effects of government actions.
According to experts, the decision to suspend vaccinations with AstraZeneka was a mistake.
— Withholding the vaccine has done more harm than any preventable side effects, the doctors wrote. – Fear is a bad advisor – prof. Ira Helsloot, one of the authors of the text.

As a result of the government’s decision, a total of nearly 289 were canceled in the Netherlands. vaccinations. According to the authors of the article, it resulted in 1 thousand. 312 additional infections. Among the infected, there were people with a higher risk of a severe course of COVID-19 (including chronically ill patients). Scientists estimate that an additional 90 people were sent to hospitals (including 30 to intensive care units). Experts believe that the ministry’s decision cost the lives of 13 patients.
– The benefits of vaccination with AstraZeneca far outweigh the risk of side effects. Politicians and the public must be aware of this and make sure that decisions are objectively justified, wrote the authors at the end of the article.
