In times of labeling and cataloging virtually everything, many new categories appear. The old theoretical framework is not sufficient to describe in detail our way of life, behavior and thinking, hence a greater increase in new theories “discovering” things not necessarily new. This can be seen, for example, in the field of reflection on human sexuality, where new types of sexual and psychosexual orientations are springing up like mushrooms after the rain. One of them is demisexuality.

Demisexuality – what does it mean?

Demisexualism it is a psychosexual orientation that is based on feeling erotic attraction only on condition that a strong emotional bond is established. Demisexualism it does not determine the gender of the person with whom the bond is established, and therefore demisexual there can be both heterosexual and homosexual relationships. What’s more, so defined demisexuality allows for building both heterosexual and homosexual relationships by the same person, i.e. as in the case of bisexuals, but unlike them demisexuality it is based not on physical but emotional attraction.

Asexualizm a demisexualizm

The name itself «demisexuality»Comes from the word for sexuality (sexuality) and the prefix” demi “meaning” half “. Metaphorically speaking, it can be said that demisexuality lies halfway between sexuality and asexuality. Demisexualism does not rule out sexual contact (like asexualism), while not based on physical attractiveness (like traditional sexuality).

Demisexualism is also known as demiromantic. Basically these terms refer to the same phenomenon. Theoretically demiromantic appears when a deep emotional bond is necessary to fall in love (i.e., the so-called love at first sight is impossible), but in people demisexuals this bond is also necessary for establishing sexual contact. Demiromantic i demisexuality it is difficult to disconnect because they do not allow emotionally shallow relationships focused on physical contact.

Demiseksualizm – test

You wonder if your psychosexual orientation is demisexuality? The test can help with this. It is true that there are no scientific ways of measuring yet demisexualismhowever, all you need to do is honestly answer a few simple questions. When meeting new people, do you pay attention to their physical appearance? Is the gender of your interlocutor important to you and does it influence the way you speak and behave? Have you ever been infatuated with a celebrity, actor or singer? Is pornography an acceptable sex equivalent for you? Can you imagine a relationship between two people based mainly on mutual sexual satisfaction? A negative answer to all or most of these questions may indicate that demisexuality is a category that can be defined for you.

Demisexual problems

The biggest problem they face demisexuals, it is easy to confuse their psychosexual orientation with asexuality. This is true for third parties as well as for themselves demisexuals. For if someone needs a close emotional relationship to build sexual desire, they may be convinced of their own asexuality until such a relationship is actually built, which is neither easy nor quick. Since she will not be interested in sexuality until then, her environment may interpret it as asexuality.

The second problem it raises demisexuality, is often confusing the (potentially) erotic relationship with friendship. In other words: for the person demisexual friendship is practically a necessary stage in building a relationship that only becomes sexual with time. Unfortunately, this is not a typical development in all relationships, so it is possible for the person to be rejected by a friend for whom they were only a friend. The very awareness of the possibility of such rejection is sometimes inhibiting for individuals demisexuals.

Demisequalism it is not new. In fact, many people wait until they develop a close emotional relationship to start intercourse. Perhaps it is our culture, which gives the possibility of faster and shallower relationships, sometimes application-based, and at the same time based on what is visible and tangible by the eye, that forced the creation of a separate category for people who do not like this state of affairs. Demisexualism however, it is not something to be ashamed of.
