Delortan – liquid allergy drug. Dosage and contraindications

Delortan is an antihistamine with an antiallergic effect in the form of a liquid solution. The active substance in this preparation is desloratadine, which is already a second-generation drug. This means that it does not have a sedative effect, does not cause drowsiness, and does not affect the central nervous system, as did the first generation drugs. Therefore, it is often recommended for patients with allergies of various kinds. However, it is worth knowing that this drug is only available on prescription.

How does Delortan work?

Antihistamines are used to prevent an allergic reaction caused by a surge of histamine. Depending on the type of allergy, it may be skin allergy, runny nose, cough or watery eyes during contact with the allergen. In the drug Delortan for allergy desloratadine, which is the major metabolite of loratidine, was used. This means that this component selectively blocks peripheral type 1 histamine H1 receptors and thus peripherally blocks the action of histamine which causes allergy symptoms.

Delortan for allergy can be used when the symptoms of allergy are, among others: runny nose, sneezing, swelling and itching of the mucous membranes, redness of the eyes, watery eyes or hives on the skin. Because Delortan given in liquid form orally, it works very quickly, reaching maximum concentration after about 3 hours, although its effect lasts for more than 24 hours.

Indications for the use of Delortan

Delortan one can use in children after the first year of life, in adolescents and adults. It is given to relieve the symptoms associated with an allergic reaction, such as in allergic rhinitis or urticaria.

Contraindications to the use of Delortan

Delortan like every drug has too contraindications. First of all, it cannot be used by pregnant or breastfeeding women. It is also not given to children under the age of one. Other contraindications to use the drug Delortan is allergic to any component of the preparation, especially to loratadine.

Sometimes current diseases and treatment with pharmacological agents are a contraindication to the use of this drug. Therefore, you should consult your doctor about all medications you are taking and your health condition before starting the treatment Delortanen. Also in young children, before the age of two, tests are needed to confirm that the mucositis is allergic and if so, then the doctor may prescribe Delortan.

One of the ingredients of the preparation is sorbitol, so people with fructose intolerance or suffering from diabetes cannot take this preparation. Also, people with impaired renal function should be careful in the use of this preparation.

How to use Delortan?

Delortan use need as directed by your doctor. With periodic manifestations of allergy symptoms Delortan apply ad hoc. However, in the case of chronic allergy, the doctor may suggest a long-term treatment with this drug in order to minimize the occurrence of symptoms.

The doctor should determine the dose adjusted individually to the needs of each patient, but unless otherwise recommended, children between 1 and 5 years of age take 2,5 ml of liquid once a day, children between 6 and 11 years of age 5 ml once a day, and children over 12 years of age and adults 10 ml once a day.
