Yolanda Cristina Gigllotti was born on January 17, 1933 in Egypt. Yolanda was the third child in the family, the sister of two brothers. Mother worked as a seamstress, father was a violinist at the Cairo Opera House. At one time, Yolanda’s parents decided to move from Italy to Egypt in search of a better life for themselves and their family.
Since birth, Yolanda’s life has been associated with risks. Her mother had a difficult birth. The baby was born in a serious condition and the doctors, fearing for the life of the newborn, allowed her to be christened on the first day of her life.
When the girl was 10 months old, she contracted an infection that damaged her eyesight. She underwent two operations at 1,5 and 4 years old, suffered from headaches. A squint appeared from a medical error. She did not tolerate the darkness well, and she also needed protection from the bright sun.
Her father died when she was 12 years old, and the family needed money. At the age of 16, Yolanda found a job as a secretary of a pharmaceutical company.
The beginning of the creative path
Since childhood, Yolanda dreamed of becoming an actress. In school theatrical performances, her acting talent was revealed.
In 1951, Yolanda decided to take part in the Miss Ondine contest, where she took 2nd place. And after 3 years she became “Miss Egypt”. It was a chance for fate to prove itself, and she used this chance. They learned about the slender beauty far beyond the borders of Egypt.
Soon she was invited to work as a model in the agency “Donna”, she was noticed by famous producers from Europe. She was offered to try herself as an actress.
Delilah
She chose the pseudonym “Delilah” in honor of the biblical seducer. Later, Yolanda will replace one letter and become Delilah.
In 1955, a film with her participation “The Mask of Tutankhamun” was released, and then another “Glass and Cigarette”, for the latter a musical composition was also written, in which Delilah acted as a singer.
After these events, she moved to live in Paris. This time was the time of the rapid development of her career. The young singer took part in the “Number One of Tomorrow” competition for young talents, winning the sympathy of the audience.
Soon a disc called “Madonna” was released, everyone expected success, but the album turned out to be a failure. She decided to take the stage again with the song “Bambino”, which became unexpectedly popular in France and Europe. A year later, the singer received the Golden Disc for this song.
Dalida’s personal life
In 1961, Delilah’s first marriage with producer Lucien Morisse took place, which allowed her to obtain French citizenship, but the couple did not live in an official marriage for long. A few years later, the singer began an affair with Jean Sobieski, a French artist, and this became the reason for the divorce.
There were many love stories in the singer’s life.
They sang a duet with the composer and singer Luigi Tenko. At one of the festivals, their number did not reach the final and Luigi committed suicide. It was a real blow for Delilah. She suffered the loss hard, tried to commit suicide, but, fortunately, the maid found her, and the singer was taken to intensive care.
This negatively affected Dalida’s physical condition, she partially lost her voice and began to suffer from bouts of deafness. The recovery was long.

In 1969 Delilah met Arnaud Desjardins. A dizzying romance began with him. However, Arno was married, and the singer decided not to destroy his family. In 1972 she will flourish again with the artist Richard Champhre, with whom she will be happy for nine years.
