The difference between dry skin and dehydrated skin
What to do if the skin on the face is dehydrated? Counter question – are you sure that the problem is dehydration? First of all, let’s try to distinguish between dehydration and dry skin.
Dehydrated facial skin is very similar to dry skin in all formal ways. There is only one significant difference: dry skin is always with you. Years pass, and she still uncomfortably tightens after washing and peels off at the first hint of bad weather. And only daily competent care keeps her in a comfortable condition.
When the skin is dehydrated, you can be sure that the condition is reversible. It is caused by internal or – more often – external factors: from ultraviolet radiation to improperly selected cosmetics, to which we will return.
Dehydration can occur in all skin types. Oily and normal immediately signal dehydration: it’s hard not to pay attention if the skin suddenly starts acting up and behaves in an unusual way. It’s a bit harder to know if you have dry or dehydrated skin. Both of them quickly lose moisture, but they need to be cared for a little differently: the first suffers from a deficiency of its own lipids, the second from a deficiency of moisture and natural moisturizing factor (NMF), i.e. a whole complex of moisture-retaining components. Dry skin also often lacks NMF elements – amino acids, hyaluronic acid, minerals. This means that she is more prone to dehydration.
In any case, a qualified cosmetologist will dispel all doubts, determine the hydration status of the epidermis and decide how to correct dehydration and what kind of care will reduce or completely remove its signs.
Causes of dehydrated skin
If you have dehydrated facial skin, there are good reasons for that. And the insufficient volume of liquid in the diet is far from the main one, since the epidermis receives most of the moisture, like oxygen, from the air. So why is the skin suddenly dry?
- Thinning of the skin barrier. One of its tasks is to retain moisture in the skin layers. The same NMF, consisting of lipids, hyaluronic acid, amino acids and other substances, helps the stratum corneum in this difficult matter.
- Uncomfortable external environment. Vacation under the scorching sun or a trip to the snow-capped mountains equally negatively affect the condition of the skin. This also includes air dried by air conditioners and heating radiators, long flights and even lack of sleep.
- Makeup mistakes. Dry skin is in itself a sign of insufficient care: it is unbalanced, does not match the skin type, or is completely absent.
On the last – care for dehydrated skin – it is worth dwelling in more detail.
How to take care of dehydrated skin?
We invite you to figure out what is missing in the care, and what to do if the skin of the face is dehydrated.
Care instructions
At home, we recommend following five rules.
- Cleanse your skin with gentle cleansers according to your skin type.
- Check your basic care. It will be good if Night and day creams contain elements of the natural moisturizing factor. Perhaps the most popular of them is hyaluronic acid. Most importantly, high molecular weight hyaluronic acid and probiotics help restore the skin’s ability to retain moisture.
- Add extra moisturizers to your daily beauty routine. Intensively moisturizing serum, tonic and fluid will be a good help in the fight against signs of dehydration of the skin.
- Complete your routine with concentrated moisturizers. A moisturizing mask, if you return to it from one to three times a week, quickly relieves the feeling of dryness, removes lines of dehydration.
- Consider the type and characteristics of your skin, choosing the texture, format and direction of care products.
What helps skin fight dryness?
When creating formulas aimed at restoring the moisture-retaining properties of the skin, cosmetic brand laboratories rely on two types of substances:
- Moisturizers (glycerin, hyaluronic acid, vegetable sugars). Saturate the skin with moisture, keep water molecules in the deep layers of the epidermis.
- Nutrients (vegetable oils, squalane). They create a moisture-retaining layer on the surface of the skin, restore the barrier properties of the skin.
Probiotic fractions also demonstrate high efficiency in strengthening the barrier properties of the skin. Owners of oily or combination dehydrated skin may need regular exfoliation – pay attention to care products with low concentrations of acids.
Correction of dehydration for different skin types
Still, skin type matters. What is yours? Is your facial skin tight, dry, and dehydrated—or more oily and dehydrated? The strategy for combating signs of dehydration is always built taking into account the activity of the sebaceous glands.
Dry
Dry dehydrated skin is characterized by low sebum production. In caring for her, we put an emphasis on moisturizing and replenishing lipids. If your skin feels uncomfortable during washing, tightness and itching, consider switching from classic cleansing to waterless, with delicate micellar water or special milk that does not require rinsing.
Oily
Dehydrated, oily skin is often problematic with imperfections, comedones, and oily sheen, so she’s more likely to like light textures. An important factor in choosing skin care products should be their non-comedogenicity.
Combined
Combination dehydrated skin cannot always please its owner with well-groomed appearance: enlarged pores and oiliness of the T-zone are accompanied by dry cheeks and fine lines in the areas of active facial expressions. In your case, multimasking in combination with light moisturizing serums will give a positive result against signs of dehydration. Also pay attention to products that help restore the skin’s protective barrier.
Age
Do not be surprised, with age, skin type can really change. With maturity comes a tendency to dryness of the epidermis, and given the progressive slowdown in the production of hyaluronic acid every year, products with this substance will be especially appropriate in care.
Evening and morning care
Beauty rituals will not change significantly, the main secret is the regularity of each stage of care. Our recommendations:
- Morning: gentle cleansing, toning, application of moisturizing serum, application of day cream according to skin type.
- Evening: two-stage gentle cleansing based on micellar water and gel or milk according to skin type, toning, application of moisturizing serum, application of night cream.
It is recommended to integrate the mask with a frequency of 1-2 times a week into the care immediately after cleansing in the morning or evening. Avoid rubbing with a cotton pad, it is better to apply micellar water and tonic on the pad liberally, and then apply it to the skin.
Seasonal care
During the change of seasons, even the happy owners of normal, problem-free skin have a completely unhappy chance to find out what dehydrated skin is. Literally any weather phenomenon makes its contribution: in the summer – the sun’s rays, in the fall – the wind, in the winter – frosts, in the spring – all together. Already experiencing seasonal dehydration? Then rethink care.
- Summer. Complement your beauty routine with sunscreen with moisturizing ingredients and an SPF of at least 30.
- Autumn. From about mid-October, it makes sense to switch to more nourishing care, in the case of oily skin, apply moisturizing masks more often.
- Winter. Severe frosts are a reason to use a protective cream at least on the problematic, driest areas of the face.
- Spring. Don’t forget a moisturizing or nourishing cream with a high degree of UV protection.
