Degeneration of the hip joints usually occurs – especially in the initial period – unilaterally. It is predisposed to its development primarily by an incorrect structure of the hip joint, and secondarily by excessive load or mechanical trauma.

The essence and basis of the ailments are degenerative changes in the articular surfaces of the cartilage of the hip joint with a progressive tendency to reduce the width of the joint space and limit its mobility. Gradually, the mobility of the joint may be completely abolished due to the reactive ossification that immobilizes the joint.

Clinically, degeneration of the hip joint is manifested by pain in the groin area, initially occurring when sitting down and standing up. These pains can radiate to the buttock and back of the thigh. Gradually, there is a progressive limitation of mobility in a given joint, impairment of twists and rotational movements in a given joint, and even complete immobility.

Diagnosis

Determines the doctor on the basis of the entirety of the disease data and usually typical radiological changes.

Treatment

Systematic specialized gymnastics is the basis of treatment, especially the longest possible maintenance of mobility in hip joints.

Even the pain experienced while exercising does not constitute a contraindication to its continuation, as the active movements performed delay the ossification process in the hip joints.

Balneological and spa treatment combined with appropriate exercises supports the treatment. In appropriately selected cases, surgical treatment is used, consisting in replacing the damaged joint with a prosthesis.
