The homeland of most breeds of decorative chickens is China and Japan. They were bred to decorate the courtyards of important nobles. Therefore, the focus was on the exterior. Later decorative breeds came to Russia. They are taken out for exhibitions and decoration of private households.
Names of decorative chicken breeds
The breeding of decorative breeds is associated with an aesthetic need. The main thing is the unusual beauty of the specimen, not the productivity. This is a costly and time-consuming pleasure. Decorative chickens are created to amaze with variety and beauty
Breeding ornamental birds is not particularly popular. However, they also find their fans.
The most popular are such decorative chickens:
- the bantam has a beautiful color: walnut, variegated, black. Egg production is low, only up to 70 eggs / year. The weight is also small, a little more than 1 kg;
- shabo – speckled, white-yellow, silvery plumage makes this breed very attractive. Egg production up to 80 eggs / year, chicken weight – about 500 g;
- brama is a large breed with dark and light plumage, very beautiful. Begins to lay from 9 months, gives up to 120 eggs / year, specimen weight – up to 3-4 kg. Chickens with dark feathers weigh half a kilo more than light ones;
- curly chickens are fluffy lumps that cannot fly at all. They weigh 2-3 kg, carry up to 160 eggs / year;
- paduan – handsome men with a tuft and a beard of white, golden black color. Very decorative, they carry up to 120 eggs / year, the weight of the rooster is about 2,5 kg, hens are up to 2 kg;
- sibrayt is a beautiful, graceful variety of bantam with a fan-shaped tail. Flies well. Carries up to 90 eggs / year, weight of chickens up to 500 g;
- Pavlovskaya was bred in the Nizhny Novgorod region. Very beautiful breed with a tuft, plumage of legs and white-speckled plumage. Carry up to 150 eggs / year, small weight: 1,5-2,3 kg;
- Phoenix is a long-tailed Chinese breed. To maintain the beauty and length of the tail, birds are kept in cages on a pole. They hardly move. Up to 160 eggs / year are carried;
- Chinese silky is like a fluffy cloud. On the head there are tanks, a tuft and a beard. The bones of these chickens are black, and the plumage is delicate, it can be white, bluish, yellow or black. Yields up to 120 eggs / year. The meat is tender and healthy. Chicken weight – up to 1,1 kg.
The most popular breeds in Russia are Bantamka, Sibright, Brama and Pavlovskaya.
Caring for decorative chickens
To maintain a spectacular appearance, decorative birds need more careful care than conventional breeds:
- Pay particular attention to warmth in the house in winter. This is very important for gentle thermophilic rocks;
- backlight is important. Daylight hours should last about 14 hours;
- the litter of the floor is loosened more often for chickens with plumage on their legs. This will help keep the plumage clean;
- in the spring, chickens are necessarily fed with vitamins and mineral supplements.
