PSYchology

Decentration — the ability to overcome one’s egocentrism, to take into account other possible points of view (for example, the vision of a communication partner).

The development of decentration contributes to the development of the personality: its socialization, the formation of its maturity, the development of its positions of perception and the improvement of communication skills. Less templates, categorical, accusatory, more understanding of the partner and the depth of vision of the subject.

Scientific background

Decentration is one of the key concepts of the theory of J. Piaget. In the works of Piaget and his followers, decentration is considered mainly as one of the factors in the socialization of children’s thinking. Subsequently, the relationship of decentration with the success of accepting the role of another person (D. Flavell), the level of development of emotional understanding (F. Deutsch), and the effectiveness of interpersonal interaction was shown.

What does it depend on?

From age: increases from childhood to adulthood and decreases to old age.

From the field of activity: at work and in business, people are more successfully freed from decentration. In the family and everyday life, we often behave like children, and instead of decentration, we often show egocentrism.
