Polish society is aging. In 15 years, as many as one-third of Poles will be over 60. These predictions encourage intensive development of social policy for seniors. One of the forms of taking care of the most mature citizens are day centers for the elderly. How do they work and who can apply for a place in such a day care home?

Day centers for the elderly – how do they work?

Unlike seniors clubs, which are places for meetings, workshops and lessons, day centers for older people have a much more extensive role. They are also often called day homes for seniors due to the fact that they operate alongside nursing homes.

Day centers for the elderly operate during the day, typically 8 hours from morning to afternoon. Their offer is intended for elderly people who are single or have a family, but its members are not available to comprehensively deal with the elderly during the day. During the opening of the day center for seniors, the pupils have the opportunity not only to participate in classes, but also to receive a hot meal.

In addition to typical recreational activities, such as board games, lessons and workshops, joint walks or exercise classes, day centers for the elderly also organize therapies and rehabilitation under the supervision of specialists. The use of the day center for the elderly is possible for the elderly, the sick and often also the disabled. Their income and expenses are also taken into account. To get into the daycare center for the elderly, you must go to the nursing home where the organization operates.

The process of qualifying a person to use the day center consists of a home visit by a social worker who assesses the situation of the senior. It is also to examine the range of needs that the elderly person or their family are unable to meet. The employee may ask for the necessary documents, including a pension slip, documents showing family income, receipts and proofs of housing charges. In addition, a person applying for a place in a day center for the elderly should submit certificates of disability, discharge from hospital or documents confirming incapacity for work.

A place in the day center for the elderly is payable. The monthly fee is set by the local council. Nevertheless, its amount may vary. It is the social worker who, after examining the situation of the senior, determines the financial possibilities of the potential ward, which are then taken into account by day care homes for seniors when determining the rate.
