Director Fincher is a very uncomfortable man in Hollywood. Only he, not at all interested in the amount of his own fee, immediately demands to rewrite the script and change the star actor, which the producers put on. And only in his films, which regularly fail at the box office, stars of the first magnitude still want to work. But it is precisely his failures that consist entirely of discoveries.

Already at the dawn of his creative youth, he showed the teeth of artistic intransigence: after seeing Star Wars, he dropped out of school to go to work at the studio of George Lucas. He became a clip maker who shaped the visual style of the 80s and 90s: the clips of Madonna, Sting, Aerosmith, Stevie Wonder are his work. But having finally received his own film project, Fincher shot something so dark, brutal and ascetic that it (although released under the Aliens label, as the third part of the saga) barely justified the money spent on it. In his «Seven» Fincher opened the thriller as an apocalyptic genre and flooded the screen with rain and Egyptian darkness, insidiously hiding from the audience the irresistible charm of Brad Pitt.

He waged war with demons in the future. When brother shot brother in The Game. When a clean clerk got a hard blow in the ribs from his second «I» in «Fight Club». When the comfortable “panic room” impenetrable to intruders turned out to be a death trap. And when in Zodiac, the director’s new film, the never found killer from the 60s keeps San Francisco and its environs at bay, as if hinting at the persecution mania that has already gripped our contemporaries … All this is Fincher’s personal verdict on the current world, which is hostile to man, because it is unable to bring at least some correspondence between the rigidity of established rules and unstoppable progress.
