Daria Kholodnykh: master class Color in makeup

The other day in Vladivostok, a rich master class “Color in Makeup” was held by the top makeup artist of Moscow Daria Kholodnykh. For two days, Daria passed model after model through her hands, talking about commercial and creative makeup to the participants of the master class. Woman’s Day talked to the makeup queen about work and more.

Daria, on the first day of the master class you showed commercial, so-called “client” make-up. What are its features?

We can say that the first day was devoted to the model’s eye color and the ability to highlight it with makeup. I showed you how you can create more neutral and brighter make-up options, talked about how to use color in working with clients.

What is the most important thing here? The ability to highlight the eyes. Make sure that your eyes sparkle, light up thanks to the colors you choose correctly. Let the client’s eyes be the initial and final detail of the image, his accent. It is incredibly simple – not to search for and not create this accent, but to find it in the model and emphasize it as much as possible!

It was interesting to watch your work. When the image seemed to be already finished, you complemented and complemented it, revealing details.

Yes, I actually really like the detailing of the make-up! It seems boring to finish the makeup on one lip and eye color. I like to add depth to makeup, make it interesting, complete. So, in my “makeup geography” I use techniques for adding highlighters, dark / light shadows of different textures depending on the shape of the eyes, the features of the model’s face. For example, if I work with a slightly convex shape of the eye, I will emphasize it, make this facial feature as bright as possible and as convex as possible. Thanks to this, the look will look unusual, with a twist.

During the master class, you were so confident with color, where did you get this flair?

I have an incomplete art education. But I can’t say that it was in college that I was instilled with a sense of color. In my understanding, this is something innate. After all, all girls initially have a sense of taste and style, starting from childhood, when we played with dolls, dressed them in different dresses, etc.

My personal understanding of color is influenced by the work of great artists and, of course, the nature that surrounds us. Sky color: sunset, sunrise. I just remember all these combinations around me and apply them in the future.

While working on your makeup, are you following a plan, or are you allowing yourself to improvise?

90% of the time I don’t use a well thought out image. Of course, I know where to start, what should be the approximate result, etc. But, for example, the model I just worked with, I had absolutely no plans to dye my hair green-turquoise!

In my makeup lessons, first of all, I try to explain why I started to paint this way, and not otherwise, why this particular color is needed here, and not another. I show and explain possible makeup alternatives, because every person is different. In addition, it helps make-up artists work independently in the future. To focus not on my specific actions, but to create my own solutions and forms.

What can you say about the master class in Vladivostok? How did “our” make-up artists show themselves?

It seems to me that what I showed on the first day of MK was unusual. On the one hand, it was client makeup, but at the same time I made it bright and bold. On the practical side, not everyone has succeeded in applying the concept of depth to makeup. Understand what it is. It was clear that some concepts for the participants of the master class are new. But it was precisely because of this that it was pleasant to see a good result in people who were working in such a “mode” for the first time. There was not a single makeup artist ruining the makeup. Everyone did a really good job.

Is it possible to surprise the modern public, what do you think?

Of course! And I have already gone beyond the thoughtful image, picking up colored hairspray. As I said, I did not plan to do this at all, so I surprised myself. As for the face frames of the model – here I love to paint the ears. This is my favorite part on the human head. I admit, I would do neutral makeup on my face and pay all my attention to the ears. I love to dye my hair, neck, collarbones, hands. For me, this is an addition to the image.

How did your passion for bodypainting begin?

It all started with the usual make-up at the salon. I was born in Kazakhstan, Petropavlovsk – a small town on the border with the Omsk region. There are only 10 salons per city, and when I painted myself some yellow arrows, blue lips, it all looked unusual and new. At that moment I came across the site of Anastasia Durasova, she was engaged in body art, and for me it was a real revelation: wow, you can paint not only the face, but also the body! Body art has taken a serious place in my life. Then I realized that this was not in demand in Russia, and I switched from body painting to creative make-up as a simplified version.

Happiness is the ability to be yourself

You create such colorful pieces. Why are you wearing black yourself?

Black is a professional color and came to me from working at MAC. Black is like a good tone for a makeup artist. Thanks to this color, the accent goes to the model, to your work. After all, everyone should pay attention to your result, and not to yourself. At the same time, it should be added that my make-up is absolutely calm, neutral. There is no bright lipstick or eyeshadow.

I love color! I love blue and red, turquoise. Let now, for the time of the master class, I am in black, but my things “behind the scenes” are full of color: I have a red suitcase, a red cover for an iPad, etc. I can spend my life outside work in open bright colors of clothes, wear a red hat, turquoise green jeans, an emerald T-shirt, and a blue sweater on top. But when I go to the store for clothes for work, I only look at black things: black dresses, black shoes.

What do you think about using social media as advertising platforms?

A long time ago I blogged – LJ. And, perhaps, this was my most correct decision. I have been writing to it for five years and have been completely honest. She wrote about her work, about her knowledge, she was not afraid to speak out. This is what brought me success.

Now I want to restore that former LJ space as a personal site. Perhaps use or revise some of the articles and write new ones. After all, I have changed, developed, I have a story to tell and something to share.

As for the rest of the social networks, I don’t want to say anything, I just recommend Austin Cleon’s books Steal Like an Artist and Show Your Work. They just say that you must have a website, a page, a space on the Internet so that any person in the world can enter and look at your work.

Can you call yourself a successful person? And what does “success” mean to you personally?

It seems to me that success is the happiness of doing what you really like. And this is not about money. After all, you can earn millions, but be dissatisfied with your life. And the happiness of success lies precisely in comfort, in the joy of what you do and create. For me, happiness is the result of my work.

Happiness is also the ability to be yourself. When you can do something not for the client, not for society, but for the sake of self-expression. And as for happy customers, they are those who delight the people around them. And not because the makeup is good, but because they themselves begin to glow from the inside, to see this beauty in themselves.
