After the death of his beloved wife, Llewelyn finds herself on the streets of a foreign city with no job, no purpose in life, and little to no money.
Just as he is ready to give up the fight, Jensen, a Vietnam War veteran and itinerant Zen master, enters his life. Together, the heroes have to go through a lot: thanks to Jensen, Llewelyn will understand that asking for alms is not at all ashamed if you ask for it for real, that neither wealth nor success are the key to happiness, and that only by freeing yourself from irresistible attachments can you learn to truly love himself, the world around him and the people living in it.
