Store shelves are full of anti-dandruff shampoos. However, they do not always solve the problem. What to do? Get the help of a dermatologist who will help you choose a pharmacy shampoo.
Types of dandruff
The fungus that lives on our head is responsible for the formation of dandruff. It feeds on the secretion of the sebaceous glands and causes the skin to peel excessively. The human head is the habitat of up to a million of these fungi.
There are several varieties of dandruff. The most common dry dandruff is primarily an aesthetic problem. White scales on hair and clothes are not an attractive decoration. However, this type of dandruff is not as dangerous as oily dandruff. In the case of this ailment, instead of small, dry and white scales, greasy, yellow and layered scales appear, forming even scabs. They are more firmly attached to the ground. The disease may be accompanied by itching.
Sometimes there is also skin erythema, pimples and oozing lumps. – Oily dandruff can be accompanied by hair loss. In this case, their loss is irreversible – says dermatologist Beata Kociemba. – That is why it is so important to fight him.
Treatment of dandruff
Shampoos available in stores help keep dandruff in check. However, if they turn out to be ineffective, you need to consult a dermatologist. Doctors say that shampoos available in stores are gentler than those sold in pharmacies. – Pharmaceutical preparations contain higher concentrations of healing substances – explains Beata Kociemba.
In extremely severe cases, the dermatologist will advise you to take antifungal drugs and special ointments in addition to shampooing. We use medicated shampoos no more than once every three or four days. If it is necessary to wash your hair more often, especially in case of increased seborrhea, shampoos should be used to improve the condition of the hair.
Anti-dandruff shampoos – how do they work?
Hairdresser and stylist Dariusz Kościński explains that the method of applying anti-dandruff shampoo is different than the “regular” one. After the hair is wet, we spread the shampoo on the scalp. We do it with our fingertips, gently moving them over the scalp. Remember that anti-dandruff shampoo is highly condensed, which means that it does not lather like other shampoos. The first wash should take two and a half minutes. After distributing the shampoo on the skin, try rubbing it into your hair. The first rinse may be slightly shorter than the final rinse.
The second wash looks similar. It cannot last less than three minutes because the shampoo has to penetrate the scalp. It is important not to overdo it with the amount of shampoo. Remember – after washing the head, apply the conditioner only to the hair. The shampoo leaves a protective layer on the skin and the conditioner could destroy it.
Are you looking for a shampoo that will effectively help you get rid of dandruff? Buy Capillus shampoo, which, thanks to the content of hemp extract, grapefruit and marjoram seed extract, regenerates the scalp and regulates exfoliation of the epidermis, acting against dandruff.
Contagiousness of dandruff
– Oily dandruff is contagious. The causing fungus can spread to our head with the help of a comb – says Kociemba. — If someone has good immunity, there is no problem with keratinization of the skin and there is no seborrhea – the risk of contracting this fungus is small. However, it does exist – he adds.
Therefore, we should not use someone else’s comb or lend someone our own. At the hairdresser, let’s demand disinfected or disposable instruments. Let’s not forget about washing our own comb ourselves.
