Dagestan

“Dagestan” is a brandy that is associated primarily with the Kizlyar Brandy Factory, which has been producing a drink under this name since 1967. The company, which celebrated its 2015th anniversary in 130, is one of the largest producers of strong alcohol in Russia. The assortment portfolio of the enterprise includes 12 brands of cognac.

Brand history. The founding date of the cognac factory is considered to be 1885: it was then that several handicraft distilleries united under the leadership of David Saradzhev. In the production of cognac, the industrialist invested significant financial resources and truly invaluable experience gained while visiting cognac houses in Charente. Creatively rethinking French traditions, Kizlyar winemakers have found their own style. Spirits aged in Caucasian oak barrels acquired a unique bouquet and taste, which were soon appreciated beyond the borders of Russia.

During the Soviet period, cognac production in Dagestan was restored precisely on the basis of the Sarajev factory. In 1961, new production buildings were built, equipped with more advanced technological equipment. The building of the old factory has been preserved and is used as a workshop for aging cognac distillates. Having gone through a wave of anti-alcohol companies, the collapse of the Soviet Union, and the rupture of business ties developed over decades, by the beginning of the 2000s, the plant restored production volumes.

Disputes over trademarks

The work of the Kizlyar Cognac Factory is complicated by one of the fundamental problems of the Russian cognac market: a weak degree of legal protection. In the absence of universally recognized and legally protected quality standards for the product known as “Dagestan cognac”, a growing number of manufacturers label their products with trademarks that do not belong to them.

For more than three years, FSUE KKZ has been litigating in courts of all instances in order to regain the rights to the Lezginka trademark. In the end, the company managed to prove that the names of the same name, owned by another company, are misleading consumers.

A similar situation is developing with the Dagestan trademark: brandy under this name is also produced by the Izberbashsky wine and brandy factory. More recently, the same product was present in the assortment line of the Derbent Cognac Plant, giving way to brandy called “Great Dagestan”. The Makhachkala winery is promoting its own version – “Ancient Dagestan”.

To help customers who want to avoid buying counterfeit products, the website of the Kizlyar plant provides a convenient service: checking the federal special stamp.
