PSYchology

The Guardian editor James Ball and the designer have joined forces to create a real encyclopedia in the «infographic» genre — these are not boring graphs and tables, but a kind of synthesis of text and images, which allows you to understand the essence of the subject as clearly as possible.

Each page reflects one aspect of our history, culture and daily life. There are also unusual topics: how our clothes evolved, what mental disorders are the most common, whether we will be able to populate other planets. The editor of the British newspaper The Guardian James Ball and designer Valentina D’Efilippo have joined forces to create a real encyclopedia in the «infographic» genre — these are not boring graphs and tables, but a kind of synthesis of text and images, which allows you to understand the essence of the subject as clearly as possible. For example, the ratio of progress in different areas of production can be depicted as a mechanism with gears of different sizes, shapes and colors, and the most popular books in the world as a shelf with volumes, where the size of each volume reflects the percentage of popularity of the book. The visibility of each topic highlights interesting and paradoxical moments. For example, the number of atheists on Earth was the largest in the 1970s (19,2%), and has decreased by almost 10% today. And in terms of the number of those who suffer from obesity, Italy, the birthplace of the famous “Mediterranean” diet, unexpectedly turned out to be in second place after the United States.
