Cypress tree Yvonne

Lawson Cypress Yvonne is an evergreen coniferous tree of the Cypress family with high decorative qualities. This variety will serve as a good decoration of the site both in summer and in winter. It is resistant to phytophthora, has a fast growth rate and differs among other varieties in good frost resistance, so that the tree can be planted in almost all regions of Our Country.

In landscape compositions, Lavson Yvonne’s cypress is most often used to decorate alleys.

Description of Lavsona Yvonne cypress tree

The height of the tree is 2,5 m. The plant reaches this mark on average in the 10th year of life, however, with a lack of sunlight, it hardly grows above 7 m in height. The diameter of an adult tree usually does not exceed 3 m.

As you can see in the photo below, the branches of the Yvonne Lawson cypress grow upwards, almost vertically. The crown of the tree is cone-shaped and quite dense. If the top of the cypress tree is too narrow, it may tumble a little to one side.

The bark of the cypress is brownish-red. The needles of young plants are represented by many small needles, but in adult trees they gradually transform into small flat scales.

The color of Yvonne Lawson Cypress varies depending on the type of soil in which it was planted, but in general, yellowish tones with a green tint predominate. In shaded areas, the needles of the tree are somewhat paler than those of plants that grow in the sun.

Cypress cones are oval and small – no more than 1 cm wide. They differ in type for men and women. The former have a pinkish color, while the scales of the latter are painted in pale greenish tones. As the cones mature, they become covered with a thin wax coating. In September, the scales open and release a large number of flying seeds.

Planting and caring for cypress Yvonne

Lawson Cypress Yvonne is planted in open sunny areas. Planting in partial shade is possible, however, with strong shading, the tree does not grow well. Of great importance when choosing a place for planting is the level of groundwater – if they are too close to the surface of the earth, the roots of the cypress may begin to rot. Also, excessive soil moisture provokes the development of fungal infections.

Drying out of the soil is no less detrimental to the development of the tree, so it is imperative to water the near-stem circle before it begins to crack.

Rules of landing

The algorithm for planting Lawson’s cypress variety Yvonne is as follows:

  1. The site chosen for planting is dug up in the fall and fertilized with a mixture of peat, humus, sand and sod land, taken in a ratio of 2: 2: 1: 3. By spring, the soil mixture will rot and form the environment necessary for better survival of seedlings.
  2. Immediately before planting the plants, a drainage layer of broken brick or crushed stone is placed at the bottom of the planting pits and sprinkled with mineral fertilizers with a high content of nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium.
  3. It is recommended to dig planting holes to a depth of 20 cm. The distance between two adjacent holes is 1,5-2 m.
  4. The roots of the seedling are evenly laid out along the bottom of the recess and sprinkled with earth, lightly tamping it down.
  5. Planting ends with moderate watering.
Important! It is impossible to deepen the root collar when planting a cypress. This will lead to the rapid death of the plant.

Watering and top dressing

Cypress Yvonne is a frost-resistant plant, but extremely vulnerable to long periods of drought. In order for the tree to develop normally, it must be watered regularly.

In summer, the frequency of watering is 1 time per week. Under each plant, leave an average of 1 bucket of water. Young cypress varieties Yvonne are recommended to be sprayed on hot days.

Advice! After watering, slightly loosen the near-stem circle, clearing the area of weeds.

Young plantings begin to fertilize only 2-3 months after being placed in open ground. Yvonne’s Lavson cypress is fed primarily with complex mineral fertilizers, but by mid-July, such feeding is stopped.

With the onset of spring, when the active growth of cypress begins, organic fertilizers with a high nitrogen content are applied to the soil. Such top dressing contributes to a better set of green mass. Apply fertilizer after watering. After that, the trunk circle is watered again, not so abundantly. This is done so that the beneficial substances are quickly absorbed into the soil and reach the roots of the cypress.

Advice! The variety responds well to sprinkling the near-stem area with crushed peat.

In autumn, plantings are not fed.

Mulching

For better moisture retention, it is recommended to mulch the surface near the cypress trunk. Also, a layer of mulch will serve as a good protection against the spread of weeds, overheating of the soil and freezing of the roots when growing cypress in the northern regions of the country.

Material suitable for mulching:

  • sawdust;
  • pine needles;
  • crushed tree bark;
  • wood ash;
  • peat;
  • straw;
  • cut grass.

Trimming

The crown of the cypress Lawson Yvonne, if desired, is easily formed. In addition, the removal of part of the shoots in the canopy contributes to better shoot formation. To do this, usually remove up to one third of the total number of annual branches.

In autumn, it is necessary to carefully examine the Yvonne cypress and cut off all bare branches, as they will dry out with the onset of cold weather. With the onset of spring, another sanitary pruning is carried out, removing broken, frozen or dried shoots. This procedure can be combined with the formation of a crown and press the cypress into the shape of a regular cone.

Important! The first pruning is done only a year after the planting of the cypress.

Preparation for winter

In the description of Lawson’s cypress variety Yvonne, it appears that this plant is one of the most frost-resistant varieties. Mature trees of this variety are able to safely withstand temperatures down to -25-29°C. Despite this, it is better to cover plantings for the winter, especially in regions with severe winters.

Any covering material is suitable for this: dry spruce branches, burlap, special kraft paper. This is necessary not only to protect the root system of plants from low temperatures, but also to protect the cypress from sunburn. This is a fairly common occurrence in May, when the snow begins to melt.

Advice! Due to sharp jumps in the temperature regime, small cracks may appear on the cypress bark. Such damage cannot be ignored – they should be treated with garden pitch as soon as possible.

Reproduction of cypress Lawson Yvon

There are several ways to propagate Lawson’s cypress variety Yvonne. It can be done:

  • cutting method;
  • seed way;
  • through withdrawals.

From this list, cypress propagation by cuttings is the most popular. This is due to the simplicity of the method and speed – when breeding a tree with cuttings, you can get a young plant the fastest.

The cutting algorithm for the Yvonne variety looks like this:

  1. In the spring, during the period of active growth of cypress, it is necessary to cut off part of the shoots up to 35 cm long, but not less than 25 cm. In this case, young branches should be selected for reproduction.
  2. After cutting, the cuttings are buried in loose, moistened soil and covered with plastic wrap or a bag.
  3. Containers with planting material are rearranged in the greenhouse.
  4. Seedlings are periodically sprayed so that the soil in containers with plants does not dry out.
  5. After 3 weeks, the cuttings will form the first roots. After 1-2 months, they will take root, after which they can be transplanted to a permanent place.
Important! When propagated by cuttings, cypress retains a cone-shaped crown.

Reproduction by seeds requires much more time. In this way, Yvonne cypress is propagated according to the following scheme:

  1. Seeds are removed from ripe cones in autumn.
  2. They are dried at a temperature of + 40-45 ° C.
  3. The next step is seed stratification. To do this, they are soaked in water at room temperature for 6 hours.
  4. Then the seeds are sent to storage. They are packed in a paper envelope and stored at a temperature not lower than +5°C. Germination of planting material is maintained for a long time – seeds can be sown even 15 years after harvest.
  5. In October, the seeds are planted in containers and containers are taken outside until February. At the same time, in order to avoid freezing, they are covered with dry grass or snow.
  6. In March, the containers are brought into the house. In early April, the first shoots should appear. Then they begin to moderately water and cover to protect from direct sunlight.

Reproduction by seeds stretches for at least 5 years. Only then is it possible to land on a permanent place.

Important! When propagating cypress by seed, it is likely that the seedlings will be deprived of some varietal traits. That is why vegetative methods of breeding varieties are more popular.

It is much easier and faster to propagate the Yvonne variety through layering. To do this, you must adhere to the following algorithm:

  1. The lower shoot of the cypress tree is gently bent to the ground.
  2. The end of the branch is fixed to the ground so that it does not unbend.
  3. The bent shoot is watered in the same way as the parent bush. A year later, it is separated from an adult plant.

Diseases and pests

Yvonne Lawson cypress is rarely affected by diseases. As the main threat, late blight of the root system is distinguished. Sick plants must be dug up at the first sign of the disease – the rapid withering of the shoots. The dug up cypress is burned away from the garden plot. The remaining plantings are sprayed with any fungicides.

Of the pests, the following insects pose the greatest danger:

  • mining moth;
  • aphid;
  • bark beetles;
  • spider mite;
  • cherevets;
  • shield;

Conventional insecticides work well with them.

Conclusion

It is not so difficult to grow Lawson’s cypress Yvonne – even beginners can do this task. Most often, I use the variety in flower arrangements in combination with other conifers: spruces and thujas, but you can also combine them with roses and other perennial garden crops. Yvonne cypress looks equally impressive both in single plantings and in group ones. Growing a tree is possible in open ground and in special spacious containers.
