The holiday is annual, has a fixed date. Cynologist’s Day is celebrated 21 June. This holiday is not registered in national documents. But he is mentioned in various orders of law enforcement agencies, where there are cynological units. Plus civil organizations join the celebration.
History of Cynologist’s Day
This holiday originated in the Ministry of Internal Affairs, but over time it began to be celebrated by all specialists in working with dogs. And although tetrapods have lived with humans since ancient times, the first official structures appeared relatively recently. Let’s start the story about the history of the Cynologist’s Day with the events of the beginning of the XNUMXth century.
The year is 1906, the scene is St. Petersburg. The head of the detective department of the police, Viktor Lebedev, orders the use of dogs for official tasks. He spotted this idea during a working trip to Belgium, where he visited a police kennel. By this time, in Europe, for several decades, the labor of dogs had been used not only for protection and hunting, but also in the sanitary services, post office, and signal troops. But it was in law enforcement that there were not so many precedents. Therefore, the Empire was among the pioneers.
In 1908, a sensational performance takes place in Brussels, the purpose of which is to show that dogs can detect explosives. The public was shown how pets easily looked for a box of dynamite among a mountain of boxes. At this time, we are creating the ” Society for the Encouragement and Use of Dogs in the Police and Guard Service.” Its charter is published. This is the first document in the country that regulated the work with dogs.
However, a different event was chosen for the date of the holiday. On June 21, 1909, the country’s first detective dog kennel was opened in St. Petersburg. Under him, a school of trainers operated. By the way, the most famous graduate of this school was the legendary Doberman Tref, who has not only solved hundreds of crimes, but also participated in training films dedicated to the work of police dogs. On the date of this event in 2004, an order of the Ministry of Internal Affairs was published, which approved the Day of Canine Units. Later, both civilian specialists and employees of other departments began to celebrate the holiday. So the Day of the Cynologist appeared on the calendar.
Holiday traditions
First of all, the celebration is celebrated in departments where there are cynological units. These are the police, the Ministry of Emergency Situations, the military, the National Guard and the Federal Penitentiary Service. On the Day of the Cynologist, competitions among specialists are held. Be sure to have a solemn part, during which employees are congratulated and awarded. The Ministry of Internal Affairs even has a commemorative medal in honor of the formation of the cynological service.
There are clubs for young cynologists. There are not so many of them in the country, but still they are. Celebrate the celebration there. For example, the Podolsk branch, which is handled by the border service, holds a flash mob parade: they show a small performance in the park.
Finally, cynological clubs in cities spend their holidays. But these are not large-scale celebrations. Cynologist Day is celebrated by their team, they invite students who take their pets for training.

In a narrower, everyday sense, a cynologist is a specialist in the upbringing and training of dogs. At the same time, a real cynologist not only teaches the dog to follow commands, but also forms a character, taking into account the natural abilities of the pet. In addition to training directly with the dog, the specialist teaches the owner how to properly handle the pet, builds relationships between the owner and his animal. Random people do not come into this profession. It is suitable only for those who truly love animals, since working with dogs is a difficult job that requires attention, patience and consistency.
“Sometimes beginner dog breeders don’t know how to train their dog just because they haven’t had that experience. After all, raising your pet is sometimes difficult and requires patience. This work must be carried out daily and systematically. And just when the dog breeder has problems with training the dog, the cynologist comes to the rescue. This is a specialist who acts as a kind of translator between the owner and the dog. A professional cynologist knows everything about dogs, about the peculiarities of their upbringing and training, about their care and habits, he is patient, attentive to animals and has a strong character. He needs full knowledge of physiology, psychology of animals, methods of training various breeds and nuances in breeding dogs, he must also have basic veterinary skills.
In the modern world, cynologists with their pets are involved in various fields of activity. Cynologists of the Ministry of Emergency Situations and their dogs search for victims of natural and man-made disasters; cynological units of the Ministry of Internal Affairs participate in the search for criminals, search for missing people and the bodies of the dead, weapons, drugs, explosives and devices, patrol the streets, inspect airports and railway stations; at customs and in border units, cynologists prepare their wards for security, escort and guard duty.
A special area of work for a cynologist is the training of helping dogs: guide dogs, which become the main assistants and constant companions of a visually impaired person, and “therapist” dogs, which provide psychological comfort and warmth to people in hospitals, nursing homes, hospices, participate in the rehabilitation of children – disabled people.
The demand for cynologists is growing every year. Competent specialists work in the public service and in commercial organizations. Power structures cannot imagine their existence without dog handlers: the federal security service, the police, internal troops, border troops, customs and many others. Cynologists work in kennels, clubs, zoos, circuses, pet stores and training centers. They come with their wards to rehabilitation centers, helping people recover from an accident and a long illness. And, of course, a good specialist can work for himself, breeding purebred puppies or providing training, handling, grooming services.
Cynologists usually study at colleges, for this you need to choose the direction “Cynology” after the 9th or 11th grade, you can also graduate from the university in the direction of “Animal Science”, “Veterinary Medicine” or “Biotechnology” or take specialized courses.

Usually they are looking for specialists on the Internet or on forums, sometimes they are found on the recommendation. But it is best to seek help from breeders or kennels, since most of them have contacts of trusted specialists who know how to work with your dog specifically.
When choosing a cynologist, be sure to find out about the availability of special education. Read about what courses he took, whether he has a specialized education. Before the meeting, read the recommendations and reviews: as a rule, they write a lot about such specialists on social networks and on the pages of specialized Internet resources. At the first lesson, pay attention to how your animal reacts to a new person, this will tell you a lot about his professionalism. Take a closer look at the manner of communication of the dog handler, evaluate his ability to explain complex things in detail and in an accessible way. In order to get an adequate result, it is necessary to indicate your expectations at the first meeting: what do you want to achieve after the end of the class? If you observe progress that will eventually lead to the desired goal, you have chosen the right specialist. However, we must not forget that the owner is equally required to be attentive and regularly attend all training sessions. Usually, training with a dog handler is exciting and intense, and if you find a competent specialist who is passionate about his work, the result will not be long in coming.
