Many gardeners dream of getting roses in their flower garden. There are many ways to breed these flowers. One of the most popular is to grow rose cuttings in potatoes. This method allows the cuttings to take root faster, as well as to obtain the nutrients necessary for further growth.

How to grow a rose from a cutting in a potato: the choice of planting material

For propagation, it is best to choose fresh roses of red or pink color – cuttings from them take root faster. Flowers should be with unblown buds and strong stems, without signs of disease. It is not recommended to use imported roses.

For growing cuttings in potatoes, it is better to use red roses.

The best time for grafting is late spring, second half of summer or early fall. If roses are taken from a bush before flowering or immediately after it.

Potato tubers should be large or medium in size, with no signs of decay or sprouting. Freshly dug root vegetables are ideal.

How to plant a rose stalk in a potato

You can propagate both spray roses and flowers from a bouquet. Several cuttings can be obtained from one stem of a rose. Rooting them into potatoes consists of several stages:

  1. At the initial stage, it is necessary to divide the stem into cuttings, each of which should be at least 15 cm. It is better to cut them from the middle part of the stem. This should be done with a knife, retreating from the bud by 1,5 cm. The upper cut of the cutting should be straight, the lower one – at an angle of 45 degrees. Leaves must be removed from all cuttings.
  2. It is necessary to remove all eyes from the potatoes with a knife, then make a hole to the middle of the tuber.
  3. One cuttings must be inserted into each prepared root crop. To speed up the rooting process of a future rose, you can use special growth stimulants. They are applied to the lower edge of the cutting. Instead of ready-made preparations, you can also use aloe juice.

In the warm season, planting material can be planted directly into open ground. To do this, you need to choose a sunny place on the site that will be protected from the wind. It is best to prepare the soil in advance. Rotted manure, humus or a complex mineral solution are used as fertilizers.

Tubers with cuttings must be planted in holes spilled with water to a depth of at least 15 cm, the distance between the tubers is 20-30 cm. The stems must be covered with glass jars from above.

Growing roses through cuttings in potatoes is a simple and reliable way that even novice gardeners can use. With its help, you can easily and quickly propagate the type of this flower you like.
